Top 10 coolest and lamest pops of 2013!

Postby gruppetstudios » Thu Jan 02, 2014 9:34 am

WHAT ARE YOUR PICKS? ALSO, THIS LIST IS STRICTLY MY OPINION!

COOLEST:

10.
Spoiler: show
DISCO SKELETOR (SDCC EXCLUSIVE): I just really liked how they made a nod to the original MOTU action figures and the strangest of the series, the "disco" skeletor.

9.
Spoiler: show
TURBO: I just think Turbo looks really cool. He reminds me of an old slapstik.

8.
Spoiler: show
DR. MANHATTAN: I love this guy. I never really liked the comics as a die-hard fan, but they were still enjoyable to me. I like this pop more than Rorshack because, well, it GLOWS!!!:)

7.
Spoiler: show
ROCKETEER: I was VERY surprised Funko made him, and they did it perfectly.

6.
Spoiler: show
HEADLESS NED STARK: ok, I'm just going to say it. I DON'T REALLY LIKE GAME OF THRONES. I do, however, I like the idea Funko went with on Headless Ned. The magnets, however they work, will guarantee your Ned doesn't lose his head.

5.
Spoiler: show
INVISIBLE BILBO BAGGINS: Do I really have to say anything?

4.
Spoiler: show
LUMPY SPACE PRINCESSI just...I love it. It's a great design and a great figure.

3.
Spoiler: show
SDCC EVIL MINION: Not only do I love the way metallic paint looks on this guy, I just laugh whenever I look at him! lol

2.
Spoiler: show
PREDATOR: I just love his design!!!

1.
Spoiler: show
HANNIBAL LECTER: Yeah yeah, you all saw this one coming. I not only think his design is one of the best, it's the most creative pop figure yet! They could have easily made him in a boring, white t-shirt with some blood on his face, but they did us one better! They put him in a straightjacket on a dolley with his mask and everything!! I love you, Funko! =D>

LAMEST: (SORRY IF ANYONE IS OFFENDED, BUT IT'S MY LIST)

10.
Spoiler: show
PETER PARKER: Spiderman's body, Sheldon Cooper's head.

9.
Spoiler: show
SUPERMAN (MAN OF STEEL): Just like the next entry, It's the same figure with a minor change to the outfit.

8.
Spoiler: show
ALL THE "NEW 52" RE-DESIGNS: This is kinda cheating, since it's more than one pop, but I don't care. You can't just put some lines on a pop figure and then call it something new.

7.
Spoiler: show
MARTY McFLY: I'M SORRY! I know a LOT of people like the BTTF pops, and I do to! I just think Marty's design is....Boring.

6.
Spoiler: show
DERPY HOOVES: I don't really like the other MLP pops, but derpy is the worst of them. With the other pops, I can tell who the characters are. With Derpy, I had no idea who she was when I first saw her.

5.
Spoiler: show
ARYA STARK: As I said before, I don't really like GOT. This might be one of the most bland pop figures I've ever seen. It's just boring to look at!

4.
Spoiler: show
ALL OF THE ASSASSINS CREED ASSASSINS: Again, this is more than one pop, but can you really tell? They all look the same!

3.
Spoiler: show
DR. BLAKE DOWNS: Like everyone else, I forgot this pop existed quickly.

2.
Spoiler: show
SAM: SAM LOOKS BORING. HE IS BORING. THE END.

1.
Spoiler: show
ENDER: Yeah, forgot this one existed to, huh? Ender is an INCREDIBLY bland pop. I always forget he's a pop, and can you blame me? How many people bought Ender's game pops? You might be wondering why Petra isn't on the list. Well, she had SOME identifiable features to her.

And those are my top 10 coolest and lamest pops of 2013! Disagree with me? Well, leave your list in the comments below!

I don't really have time to sit and go through all my pops, but one I will highly disagree with is the Marty McFly. The design is fantastic, couldn't have been better. Bubble vest, headphones, rolled up shirt with watch, "knock-off" nikes, etc. As an 80's baby and huge fan of this movie, I couldn't see it being done any better.

This. I think he turned out perfectly. The thing to remember about some of these: Marty, Sam and Dean, Goonies...all those folks have claimed to be "plain".... is that they characters are just people. They don't have fancy costumes like in Game of Thrones or exaggerated faces like cartoon characters. The characters themselves are a product of their time that Funko had to translate into a modern figure. With Marty, it was the detail of the headphones that made me yell "It's so perfect!" when I first saw it. Sorry Gruppet, I disagree, I think it's an excellent POP and design.
I'll ponder my "coolest" list later....

The assassins might "look the same" with their hoods, but a closer look and the detail on them is great! I love my little Connor and his Native American touches to his uniform, the same can be said with the Ezio I bought my brother.
The white hood is symbolic to the Assassin's Brotherhood and to the franchise as well.
Plus, the Doctor from the Brotherhood/Revelations multiplayer was in the line up as well and he looked VERY unique.

I will play along with this one partially. As for favorites I can do that, lamest... I feel that way about most lines I don't collect so I won't go there. I will just say that I agree with all the reprints being lack luster. I would much rather have new characters than so many batman, superman, dead pool versions out there.

10. Mary poppins - loved all the detail on this one.
9. Santa Jack - not typically much for Christmas themed things but who doesn't love TNBX?
8. Agnes - was beyond stoked to get despicable me pops - especially this one. The minions are great but you can't top this kind of cuteness.
7. Thorin - a big LOTR/hobbit fan so I was glad they did him justice with the piece.
6. Shadow Illidan - never had even heard of him before the sdcc piece was revealed. However this was an amazingly well done piece that really hit on all cylinders.
5. Any game of thrones dragons - all of these look great and I can't wait to work on a few customs with this once I can get my hands on one. Love seeing something really different for the line and this has me excited for the first time about a GOT piece.
4. Retro unmasked wolverine. Love the old school paint job and love the unmasked version for this one so much better than many of the others.
3. Black and White Loki - huge fan of the gray style figures and the DW Loki was a perfect one to me.
2. Invisible Bilbo - am so excited for what is possible after seeing this awesome piece.
1. Ghost Rider Freddy - though this wasn't a wildly released piece it's still by far my favorite I have at this point. Love the demonic look of Freddy in the leather and chains.
Jesse.

In the initial list, if you mean the black SDCC variant Superman then I would agree that it isn't the best variant and definitely doesn't deserve a new number, if you mean the original Man of Steel production piece I would have to wholeheartedly disagree. It's pretty awesome and the texture on the suit is amazing.

Some of my favorites of the year are the crystal Freddy's and Freddy Batman's (both 9" and 4"), Blackest Night Batman, the blue batmobile, and not to make this entirely bat related, I really like Darkseid and the Kingdom Come Superman variant. But top of my list has to be InvisiBilbo!

I haven't really thought about it but I have to say the Judge Dredd which just came out looks awesome. Im not really a fan either but the pop looks so cool I'm getting it. I also like Zombie Merle a lot. As far as bad, Im with people on the peter parker being disappointing.

THIS!!! live people turned into pops is really hard to pull off. you really have get into detail on everything else like what they're holding or what they're wearing to differentiate them from the rest of the crowd.

by no means is this a list of my favorites. But here are some of what I think were the coolest pieces (in no particular order)

Pops
- Stan Lee (real life person)
- Riot Gear Zombie (sculpt + movable visor)
- Headless Ned Stark (great execution)
- Invisible Bilbo (so many possibilities from this piece)
- Disco Skeletor (just awesome looking)
- Metallic Ghost Rider / Ghost Rider Freddy (great use of color and the sculpt is awesome)
- Beam me Up Star Trek Big Bang Pops (very cool concept)
- Mass Effect line (the translucent pieces are a great touch)
- Merida (the sculpt is beyond awesome)
- Flocked Ralphie

Wobblers
- Rooster Teeth (Burnie Burns and Gus) They are just ridiculous
- 66 Batman set (Nailed every character)
- Metallic 66 Batman
- Pink Cowl 66 Batman Chase

The 66 Bat Wobblers are so fantastic. The Robin one especially is just so spot on.
I'm not entirely sure what came out this year vs last year lol so some of these might be old...Also I couldn't narrow it down further so I'm doing 11.
11. Walking Dead Mystery Minis. I love the blocky style! They definitely stand out in a group of blind box toys! Also, Well Zombie makes me giggle.
10. The Goonies. A fandom with too little merch especially for those people that have the few t-shirts and the posters already. I swear it's popularity has increased in the last few years. Seems like a lot of people who saw it when they were the age of the characters view it with a strong nostalgia and are now showing it to their kids-there's been a big influx of younger Goonies fans lately so these could not have come out at a better time.
9. Alien and Predator. I just love creepy things made all chibi cute!!
8. Dr Manhattan. Not really a fan of the pose but a regular release that glows in the dark! It's like their spoiling the average "I don't require exclusives" consumer.
7. Invisible Bilbo. Like others have said-it opens up so many options! And the fact that he is wearing the ring. Would've been so easy to brush off and no one would notice anyway.
6. Prison Guard Zombie. Seriously guys, articulated visor. So many possibilities with this concept!
5. 66 Batman Wobblers. They are just too perfect. Batman's eyebrows, Catwoman's sparkles, Joker's mustache. The detail is just so good and silly.
4. Nightwing. One of my favorite characters and there just isn't much merch out there of him. 'Nuff said.
3. The Rocketeer. A character I never thought I'd see anything for. Plus there was a moment when we first got them at work where my co-worker, who is the biggest Rocketeer fan I've ever seen, teared up a little upon seeing it. That gets uber points.
2. The Big Lebowski line. They are just too perfect. The little details like the white Russian, The Jesus' painted finger nail, Walter's glasses (yet another concept that opens the floor to more ideas.) Way too good. Plus The Dude has become my official "going out drinkin'" tag-along POP.
1. Harley Quinn. D'uh. The mallet variant especially. Her expression is too perfect! But really, who didn't see her being #1 on my list?

I still need the patina one! I have the patina batman and love it and rocketeer is the perfect character for that!

I will start with the pieces/lines I do not collect but I still appreciate immensely:

--Rocketeer: Spot on and beautiful color
--Hannibal: Creeps me out a lot but this piece embodies one of the best parts of the movie
--Benson: Never ever watched the show with no plan but I think it is a creative piece
--Invisible Bilbo: Not a fan of the Hobbit, GoT, TWD, or anything of the sort, but I do appreciate the brilliance of this piece
--Flocked Ralphie: LOVE
--Flocked WIcket: " "

Now, from the lines I do collect, here is my short list from someone who has collected for 10 months:

--Randall: I love this Pop. He is perfect, even his tail
--Up! Pops!: Great, great detail; love the tennis ball cane and the patched sash
--ALL of the BW Pops!: LOVE Loki, LOVE Wolverine
--Mary Poppins: My favorite childhood movie captured personally
--Stan Lee: Duh
--Metallic Ghost Rider: This piece made me a fan

That was fun :) unveiling one at a time... was like Christmas haha. I respect your opinions. The world of Pops has a million and 1 different tastes, and its nice to see how other fans rank their interests. Several on the lame list I agree with... except my lovely Assassin's Creed Pops. As mentioned, the personal details of each one on their outfits are awesome and do well to differentiate from their brethren. And now they've made Aveline, a girl with no hood, but rather a hat and braided hair, and have also previously made the Plague Doctor. And the hoods are all different to begin with. I also disagree with Marty McFly. While a little a bland, like u said, his outfit in the movie was bland to begin with... but it screams 80s era to me and gets the job done. I'm not a fan of horror Pops, so Hannibal Lecter is hardly even remotely near to my Top 20, let alone 10. I do love your inclusion of Headless Ned, Manhatten, and Invisible Bilbo... which would probably be in my Top 2, simply for its standout factor. Again, was nice to see and compare everyones tastes :)

Nobody mentioned the Batmobile? Pops with a ride gotta be cool. How about the best "exclusives" of 2013?
10. Flocked Wicket
9. Flocked Cowardly Lion
8. GITD Ghost Rider
7. Headless Ned Stark
6. Clown Dumbo
5. Batmobile <-- What a fiasco this was trying to get the variant
4. Batman Freddy
3. Ghost Rider Freddy
2. BBT Star Trek transporting (aka BBT SDCC exclusive)
1. Deadpool

I know you are going to groan about Deadpool, but how many people bought them all? Genious if you ask me, 7 variants! It also makes for the #1 lamest pop because there were so many (8 Deadpool variants and 2 unmasked variants)

Honorable mention Stan Lee

Aww man, I love the Blake Downs Pop! But then again I love Children's Hospital and Rob Corddry so it was very relevant to my interests. I really like finding unexpected people made into vinyl or action figures.

I don't have a top 10, but I think the Invisible Bilbo is really rad.

It's really tough narrowing it down to just ten spots, but I think this gang here would be my tops for 2013.

10. Tin Man

9. White Ranger

8. Predator

7. CM Punk (Bret Hart tribute attire)

6. Headless Ned Stark

5. Batman '66 series...but if I was hard pressed to cut it to one it would be Batman himself

4. Invisible Bilbo Baggins

3. Rocketeer

2. Ace Ventura

1. TMNT series...same as the Batman. If I had to narrow it down I'd pick Raphael. (Because he's my favorite)

Its a shame that you don't watch Game of Thrones, in regards to Arya there isnt much else to go on.. due to circumstances of the story thats how she looks most of the time for a few seasons. XD

Also the detail on the assassins creed ones are pretty epic too, very accurate to the costumes in the series.

Very nice coolest list though!
