Godzilla Ghost - GITD - why?

Postby Funkofish » Wed Nov 18, 2015 11:11 am

I am not really a POP! newbie with a collection of more than 150 (yes not a lot compared to most here ;-) ) but I am completely puzzled as to why he is so expensive? As far as I know he was only limited like the Iron Throne etc. and not a limited number....

So confused... ](*,)

The reasons are:
Toy Tokyo Exclusive
Was not released by other retailers*
* ForbiddenPlanet (UK) and Popcultcha (AUS) has a limited number for the region.

Plus it's a new piece, fanbase for godzilla, gitd, or whatever the preference of collecting the style came into play.

It's partly because it's Godzilla and with his initial release, there is still much fanfare. I guarantee his price will continue to go down to closer to $50 or $60 by Spring of next year.

Not sure what you consider expensive but he's on FP right now (see thread in Eye on the Web) for 25 pounds (around 38 USD). That's not too bad for a very popular exclusive that has not been widely available.

Oh and if you're on the fence about it, it is really an awesome Pop! It looks cool in light and has an awesome blue glow when the lights are out.

I agree with OP when you look at ebay prices ... But I just ordered mine at FP for $40 plus shipping (tbd) which was much easier to tolerate for me.

Side note... Shout out to beefypenguin for looking out, I'm so excited to get this pop for hubs for Christmas! I didn't think I'd be able to touch it based on how it's selling at auction. I love the folks on this board - everyone is so helpful and I don't feel weird at all in sharing my illogical and deep obsession with all things POP, unlike with pretty much everyone else I know :)

I can't see it on FP either except for the other 3 versions that are available... I can get my hands on one though, was just shocked at the price on Ebay.

There's always gonna be high prices on eBay. That shouldn't shock anyone. Keep checking the eye on the web, and wait for the price to go down

congrats to those who was able to grab him up, I usually check Fp around 9-10 a.m. eastern time. If they put anything up it seems to be around that time. not always but I occasionally catch things.

now for it being expensive (ebay price/current market value). I would actually be surprised for to go down to 50-60 bucks. No it is not a LE to a specific number but still one of the harder pops to obtain from the NYCC. I know it was not a 6 inch pop but take a look at the SDCC toy Tokyo exclusive (robot devil with violin) that only seems to go up in price as time goes on and that was not limited to specific number either.

Other then being harder to obtain then some NYCC pops, it also is a glow in the dark version which usually raises the price. Compared to the black and white it goes for about 20 - 30 bucks more. It also is VERY cool looking pop... I mean just look at above picture, its prob my favorite 6 inch pop and I never been a HUGE Godzilla fan either.

Just out of curiosity I looked at the sold auctions (actually sold, not just "completed") on eBay and WOAH!!!! The price has really shot through the roof on these! Here are the most recent sold auctions (with shipping):

72.99, 95.00, 99.99, 100.52, 100.00, 89.00, 108.26, 100.00

That FP price today of 38 bucks was a flipper's dream!

Hence why I started this thread...they really are going for crazy prices - especially for a POp that has no *limited* number...

We've had this conversation before and of course it'll never die. But in the case of Glowzilla I think its definitely one of my fave Toy Tokyo pieces and pretty cool. I was lucky to get one at NYCC but trust me they were running of the them fast and while they're not LE pieces I can totally see why the demand and prices are where they are...

Yes it isn't a numbered limited edition, but it isn't as common as the other nycc exclusives, only toy tokyo had the majority of them for sale, some have been sold by popcultcha and FPI, but i think they had a limited number as the popcultcha glowzillas sold out in 15mins(based on the time they posted for sale and sold out) even with their website crashing, only those 3 sold the gitd godzillas, no one else.

And i believe these won't be made again as they were toy tokyo/nycc exclusives, so it would surprise me too if they drop down to 50 dollars. also the godzilla pop is so awesome looking, impressed when i was actually holding them in my hand, better in real life than in pictures. these are just my opinions though ;-)

It was only a limited release and not numbered. There are guesses that there were only 500 - 1000 made.

most likely based of who was able to sell them. If he was only sold at the con. then you estimate how many they were able to sell for each day of the con

I actually never realized he was a 2014 nycc exclusive. I thought he was much older. Makes it even more impressive he cost so much so fast

They only sold 40 each day at Comic Con, so that is 160. Then they had 100 at the store in NY. They said that they had a little more for online sales than what they sold at the con and at the store. So that right there is about at least 520. Hence my 500-1000 estimate.

Supply and demand. Always what it comes down to. This one is harder to obtain then the others so as of right now the cost is higher. It's possible that in a few months from now the cost will decrease, but there is also still a possibility that it will continue to rise.

I have a feeling that this one may not have had a sticker stating a limited number but that in reality it really is. I don't think Toy Tokyo exclusives get around to much... Not like others do..

Unlikely, but then again I was surprised to see it listed on FP so far after the con so there's always hope! Regarding the price, based on previous TT exclusives it seems like they are a lot more "exclusive" (IE, produced in much more limited numbers) than the con exclusives sold by B&N, HT, etc. But that doesn't necessarily justify a high price, just spot checking SDCC TT exclusive sales on eBay it looks like Robot Devil is selling at 65-85, flocked wolfie is 50-70 and Catbug 30-40. So comparatively glowzilla is way above the trend (granted it's a 6" Pop, but still).

I think the 6" part has much do to with it being a higher price (not just because it glows n is just plain awesome)
If we consider how much he was originally at the con. I was not their but if I remember correctly he was $25? Which is about 66% more then the normal pops (priced at $15) Also robot devil was about $40-50 about a month ago on ebay. With all that in mind, I don't think he really is above trend and am expecting him to go even higher in the coming months.

Just all my opinion though and I could be waaayyy offf

Pop In A Box also sold some as well as a shop in Belgium (Kablamo) here in Europe... so there were a few others places that got it in.

the value may decrease for the short term, ie: coming months, due to flippers wanting to get their money back fast. But for the long term I believe the value will go up because it is very unlikely that this will be made again and sold again because it was a toy tokyo/nycc exclusive. also there are many collectors who aren't up to date with funko releases, and I believe many would want this pop once they know about it. this is all just conjecture though ;-)
