Custom Pop Question
Same here I'm going to try to start doing customs this weekend
I take it step 1 would be primer the whole toy first?

Step 1: wash the whole toy. Really important to do so, figures usually have a mold release residue on them that paint wont stick well to. Use a small brush if handy and warm soapy water.

Did you make the custom in your avatar? Looks good. Any helpful tips (what supplies to pick up) would be appreciated!

Start with a plan.
Wash the figure as stated. use an old toothbrush if you have one. I use dawn dishwasher soap.
If you're doing any cutting or sculpting or sanding, do that first. If it's a straight up paint aps only, then prime.
If you're working on a wobbler, you'll want to take really fine sandpaper and sand the name on the base off. It WILL show through.

Re: Custom Pop Question
Yes that's my custom, my first Pop! And first time using that paint. That paint was pretty hard to work with, think I will try it again, now that I have a better idea.
As for tips, acrylic paint is usually the way to go, and when painting, do multiple thin coats, paint will come out smoother. Some paints may need to be thinned down, acrylics can be thinned with water.
I am no authority on customs, but if you have any questions or get stuck I can try to help, best of luck on your custom, any idea what your gonna do?

On my iron man, I used mostly air brush, the metallic paint I used only works if sprayed. I used a lil bit of a brush.
If your thinking about picking up supplies, check for a michaels craft store in your area, they always have good sales on art stuff, and always have a 40% off coupon you can get from there site. I would start getting a brush set they have a few.

Custom Pop Question
I used to have an air brush long ago but it's long gone along with my little compressor I also had. Do they still make the cheap alternative air cans or are they not worth looking into?

I use spray cans for primer, and white coats. Oh yeah brushing on white and yellow is hard to get nice and even, takes a lot of thin coats.

Also, if needed is it possible to take the Pop! head off and then put it back on?

Good question! I was able to take off iron mans bobble head pretty easy, the spring kinda unscrews off. I don't have a clue about non bobble pops! I may try this weekend. I will try dipping one in hot water so the plastic softens. I would say removing the head before painting is definetly the way to go.

My husband wants a John Stewart Green Lantern in Pop! form. I was thinking that it would take this obsession to another level by doing some re-paints.

John Stewart, I am not fully aware of the costume difference, but I think it would just be a skin tone and hair color repaint, right?

Right, pretty much. I may not need to take the head off, but I wanted to have an idea of what to expect.

Re: Custom Pop Question
There's some costume changes as well that could be hard to pull off since the GL costume is partially sculpted. And he doesn't wear a mask.
I use and airbrush, and they do make the el cheapo airbrush you use a can of air with.
Thin coats is the way to go. I would suggest pulling the head off if you can.

Glad you like it Vin, I am happy to say you will have the opportunity to own him. Yes eyes were painted with an air brush.
Thank you for the comments everyone, very with how the second one came out, while not perfect I think I got the paint out right. Stay tuned on how you may be able to own him.

Re: Custom Pop Question
They look great! I need to invest in air brushing. Right now my pieces are hand painted with acrylic paints. Air brushing sounds so much easier and is probably less time consuming. Customization is great though, and lots of fun. I like molding also. I have a few projects in the work. Should be lots of fun

I used a dual action, gravity fed paache, this one I actually got in a set with a compressor, think the set was 250. I can get more info when I get home if you like. Edit: name of the air brush is Paasche Talon.

Re: Custom Pop Question
I went with that auction I showed you, my gf ended up buying it for her nails, I figured it will be perfect to start with and she's happy as well. If anything I'll just get another brush, it seems the badger patriot is popular for a low cost.

Iam excited for you, give yourself a lot of practice time, there was a lot of trial an error for me, as far as getting paint to come out at the right consistency. And keep your gun clean! That is important, it should come with instruction on how to do it.
