Underappreciated Pops!

Postby Detolf » Mon Aug 27, 2018 4:51 pm

Which pops seem to have flown under the radar? Whether it be because of a weird release or being overshadowed by other pops, there are many pops with a great sculpt and paintjob that deserve more attention. Tell me which pops you think need more love and why!

Here are my choices:
Spoiler: show
The Hulk and Bruce Banner First Appearence
Image

These Pops not only have the perfect sculpt to capture the iconic first appearance of the characters, but also serve as a really unique 2-pack between a 6" and a standard size pop. Not only is the arguably the best Hulk pop, but it also gave us the first Comic Book Bruce Banner Pop, one that I thought would never be made. It seems to have been lost in a less than successful Collector Corp box. Overall a fantastic display piece that should be admired as one of Funko's Best.

Avengers Age of Ultron Line
Image

This might be my favorite Pop line ever. Let me explain, while it's not necessarily my favorite movie it is my favorite interpretation of these characters. It's almost like these characters are in their prime with my favorite costumes for each of these characters. All of them are brightly colored and perfectly reflect the lighthearted tone of the marvel universe. Now in Pop form Funko did everything right, each of the characters have a perfect pop interpretation of their movie counterpart and a sculpt on all. I really enjoy how each character has a bright color to reflect them, Cap being blue, Iron Man as Red, and Thor with the brightest Yellow hair I've seen. Not only are the paint jobs bright and fun, funko went the extra mile to make each box have different coloring for each character. This is a level of detail I have yet to see replicated. The exclusives for this line didn't feel to repetitive, with the Metallic Vision actually being worth picking up. The Hulkbuster is honestly in my top 5 favorite pops and the new mold doesn't even come close to this classic. With the Civil War and Infinity War Lines, the Pops aren't as fun or colorful. Those entire lines have a darker tone which really doesn't help it stand out. While that may not be Funko's fault, what funko was able to do with Avengers 2 was actually incredible.

I think I’m the only person who feels this way, but the BoxLunch exclusive Star-Lord with his mixtape is honestly my favorite pop ever. It’s literally the perfect Star-Lord, but every time a favorites list comes up nobody else ever seems to mention it except for me, of course.

Jim Henson pops like Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. They're so detailed and they really nail the characters.

Also D.Va with her mech suit and LOC Aquaman with wave. I don't even collect those lines but grabbed the pops because they look so cool.

I’m going to say the 6” Demogorgon. Massive pop with a lot of incredible detail on it!

I'm not entirely sure which pops aren't as appreciated as others but I was looking at Stashpedia and saw The Log Lady from Twin Peaks value on there is $2 so I guess she'd count? At any rate, I think she's really cool! The detail on her is really nice, including the little log. I think she's great :) all the Twin Peaks Pop!s are.

Agree on Labyrinth. The set was perfectly done and it definitely slipped under the radar. I hope someday we get a second series for them

I also agree on the Hulk and Bruce Banner set. It is one of my favorites from Collectors Corps. Another line that I think is underappreciated is the Peanuts line. Maybe it's because I am older, but Charlie Brown and the gang were a staple of growing up reading the comics in the newspaper and of course all the television specials. These Pops were well done, but didn't really take off the way I expected they would. It's a shame too as there are so many other characters that could be made into Pops.

Totally agree with you on this. Didn’t seem like long after they came out, they were on clearance at Targets everywhere. Luckily I was able to get a complete set super cheap but I was surprised they weren’t more popular.

I love when the last cartoon version of Beast came out. The detail on him was great, he was big and hefty like he should have been, I loved how he had the little birds on him. For being a common I felt he was a great pop and a great addition of the line.

I think Interplanetary Batman is an underappreciated pop. Maybe because there are so many Batman pops?
It's got a really cool retro look to it, the orange helmet looks great and the rest of the pop is metallic paint. I thought that pop would get a bit more love than it seemed to

I really do love love love the Ant-man riding Ant-thony Pop! Ride and feel like it gets burried under all the various MCU pops. It manages to look fantastic from pretty much every angle, and the sculpt really is a work of art. Also R.I.P. Ant-thony <3 .

Man, I can think of three off the top of my head that came out in the past few months!

Image

The fact that nobody is gushing over Unmasked Spidey/Peter Parker from the PS4 line is blowing my mind. When was the last time we had a genuine non-MCU Peter Parker? A comic-verse Peter Parker? We've never had one, unless you count the Sheldon head-swap exclusive from a few years back. This is everything I could've wanted in a Peter Pop. His hair is kinda messy, he's wearing his suit, and he's holding his mask like he's about to put it on and swing into action. And the best part is the fact that the whole "headpieces are mysteriously tiny whenever Pops are holding them" problem is 100% justified here because Spidey's mask is made of stretchy spandex anyway. I dunno, I personally love this Pop so much. I think it's finally done comic Pete justice.

Now, I don't know about you guys, but I haven't heard much of anyone talk about Nearly-Headless. B&N had an entire table filled with him for an entire week after the con weekend, and (at least in my area) he's become a bit of a shelf-warmer. I have no clue why because the amount of detail in his outfit is staggering. Add in the fact that Funko went out of their way to give his neck a slight hinge so he could move his head side-to-side and you have an incredible sculpt. I just don't hear much fanfare for him, even from the hardcore Potter fans.

And then we have the common variant of Invisible Man. It's a drop-dead gorgeous figure that's long overdue and has been cursed with a clever, profitable Chase. Personally, I much prefer the common. Something about the dirtiness around the gauze wrapping just gives it such rich detail. I love how Funko's designers went as far as to give him his beaker of invisibility potion, too. Such a great touch, and everyone is passing it over because they want the Chase instead. Insane. This is easily one of my favorite Pops of the year.

But I think the biggest overlook, in my opinion, is Rapunzel.

Image

Funko sometimes has...let's call them "design issues" when creating female Pops. They want to keep the trademark "big head, small body" look, but they also want the female characters to have petite frames. This results in (best case scenario) kind of unsightly plastic stands or (worst case scenario) a figure that is too top heavy to stand at all.

With Rapunzel, the fix was organically woven into the character's design, and instead of going with her more-marketable braided look, Funko released her first Pop with her hair down and used her hair as a base! I love love love when Funko finds creative ways of avoiding the clear plastic stands - Slimer's ectoplasm comes to mind - and this is still the most ingenious way they've found. She was a common, released with a few other Disney lines, and nobody ever mentions her anymore.

Anyway, sorry for the long rant, I had way too much coffee this evening lol

OH! And I agree with this 100%, too! A brilliant and highly-anticipated Pop that just kind of vanished off the face of the earth. Easily one of my all-time faves.

Mehta. I'm a huge Naruto fan. And sagemode Naruto gets no love. Hell, the whole Naruto line is missing. :(

That and the GITD Dr Brown have to be two of my all time favorite pops and they ALWAYS get overlooked!
