Lord of the Rings Mystery Minis

Great things come in mysterious miniature or pint sized packages, but which great thing will it be? It's all a mystery until you open one. Then the fun begins.

Also, are these available for sale off ebay and the over inflated prices? I'm over buying these if all I get are doubles. Hoping for reasonable prices or trades.

Lots of flippers after these. Hope the next series is at Target so is 1st come, 1st serve, and somewhat fair.

Barnes has worse policies than HT.

    Sam - 46.2-46.7
    Frodo - 46.9-47.9
    Arwen - 56.3 (slightly less than Legolas/Boromir)
    Galadriel GITD - 57.4
    Legolas - 57.6-57.9
    Boromir - 57.9-58.5

    Aragorn - 60.8
    Witch King - 65.7
    Saruman - 66.2-66.3
Gimli - 72.8-73.3 (gold gimli is same weight)
    Gandalf - 76.9-77.3
Lurtz - 77.5 (slightly more than Gandalf)

cheers... For those weights of figures not in your pics, were they yours as well?

It's interesting that Arwen (1/72) and Merry (1/24) and Saruman (1/24) and Sauron (1/36) were sharing spots though, as those maths for the spots don't add up (it's usually 2x 1/24s in one spot and then 2x 1/72s and 2x 1/36s in the other magic spot...

Really nice pulls though! (did you happen to get a case letter perchance?)

So here's my Barnes story for today.

Went to Barnes today since a helpful Funatic let me know that Cali had gotten their shipment in of the exclusives. Had my layout ready and figured I'd be one of the first to take a crack at the cases. When I got there some guy was talking to the cashier about store policy or something and then left with 2 blind boxes. Cashier told me when it was my turn that store was doing only 2 per person. I asked if the cases were moved around or anything and he said that the guy before weighed every box and put them all back into the case at random. FML. He also said the guy didn't pull anything he wanted in his boxes since he was after the Invisible Frodo and Gold Gimli. I picked two boxes and got lucky pulling Gold Gimli and Boromir which I already had. Guess luck was on my side.

Previous mystery mini sets they were sent to stores in a cardboard mailer that had a letter case assortment printed on the side of it. Based on the case assortment letter you could tell which assortment you were getting and which exclusives or rares would be in that assortment.

HT cases are so frustrating!

I was meeting up with someone from a local group to sell them a Merry and Sauron. He messages asking if it's fine that he's running a little late as he wanted to stop in to one of the local HT's which had just posted they got a fresh case in. I said sure and then figured I may as well check the HT at the mall we were meeting at to see if they got restocked (they don't always post about their minis, especially restocks but they're great on any new pop shipment). They did in fact get restocked so I grabbed two and ended up with Pippin and Galadriel.

Guy I was meeting up with bought 6 from the other HT's case, also ended up with Galadriel. So frustrating when they get new cases in and they don't even contain one of the exclusives. Never again should a store have 3 exclusives, all occupying the same slot in the box.

On a positive note, my BN.com order has finally been liberated from whatever UPS trailer it had been holed up in for the last 3-4 days and is moving again, getting delivered tomorrow.

I stopped in at my only BN and the employee went to check if a case has arrived. She brought it out fresh. I pulled the 3 spots and then shook up a few boxes to find a gold gimli. I wanted to give these to my wife to open when she got home from work. Nice way for her to come home.

Ended up with a merry, gollom, gandalf and wait for it, " nazgul"

Stoked about the nazgul. Was hoping for galadriel as well.

What the heck am I going to do with all theset blasted gandalf's, I'm at 4 now.

If you went to HT and were only going to pull out 1 box, and the case was fresh, which spot would you pull from looking for a 1/72 ? I'm in need of lurtz and eowyn. ( yeah I know )

If you were to do the same at BN, where would you pull from if you were after a galadriel ?

Why was I easier to find 2 1/72 arwen and nazgul, but so hard to find lurtz and eowyn?

Had some crazy luck with my Barnes and Noble order. Bought 12 boxes online and ended up getting all three exclusives, couldn't be happier! These are some of the best looking mystery minis I think Funko has ever made!

Our local HT got two cases in, and one was Galadriel (what I got), and the other Witch King (which I already had so one of the other local hunters got since we ended up in the store at a similar time). So frustrating that this is probably the last restock for my local stores and still no luck with the 1/72s :(

Of the two stores, between the first and second restocks, there were 5 boxes, and all of them had 1/36s (3 Witch Kings and 2 Galadriels). Luck was not on my side there today!

There are several mystery mini groups on facebook where people buy/sell/trade minis. You might want to join a few of those, or just any local funko facebook group for your area. I've traded/sold most of my duplicates in my local FB group, and have bought a few I still needed for retail (the BN invisible Frodo, and Pippin).

Kevin926 wrote:Hello all. I'm new at collecting minis. Actually , these are my wife's but I am helping her. I have helped out by getting a couple of cases and now I'm getting double after double. Only need 2 from HT exclusives and the nazgul from the other. Also a BN galadriel. I am new here but I'm no beginner or stranger when it comes to collecting. I'm a vintage star wars toy collector along with other vintage lines.

My questions are about the rarity. HT stores vrs BN stores speak for themselves. In my area, BN stores are very few and far between. I have only 2 BN stores in a 100 mile radius. There are atleast 10 HT stores within 30 miles. Why are BN exclusives less expensive vrs the HT exclusives ? With all of the HT stores, wouldn't BN minis be the most rare? You can't buy them online from BN but you can from HT.

Very strange. I'm wondering what we will see shortly after the dust settles. I'm seeing prices going down on ebay.

I'm seeing plenty of stock in the stores for the non exclusive cases. HT are the most expensive, and BN hardly has them in stock and only get one case at a time.

One last question. Are these limited? I'm seeing a bunch of different minis out there with multiple cases at a time, while lord of the rings with only 1 case.

Thanks in advance
Kevin

They are available online with B&N, and the B&N ratios are much better (1/6, 1/12, and 1/36). I think the stores that are there are much better about restocking multiple times as well, whereas HT only typically restocks 1-2 times.

Going to try to hit another Barnes and Noble or two on my lunch break to try and find a Nazgul. Not much hope really. Looks like most of the cases were already gotten too and they all have the one rare missing so far. Part of me really just wants to buy one, but $60 on ebay is just too much. Need to track down some regular cases or maybe try for a trade somewhere. This set, while aggravating to collect really does look so amazing though :)

I would give it some more time since he's in the common cases as well! Gamestops should be getting them at some point, as well as TRU and other non-exclusive stores. Maybe Box Lunches will get restocked too, if you have those nearby.

Hoping that my luck holds for the rest of the day -- local BN.com got a case in today so I figured I'd take a shot at picking up 2 of the 3 remaining minis I need (Arwen, GitD Galadriel & Gold Gimli). Grabbed the BBL for Gold Gimli (and could tell by the weight in hand this was accurate) and then grabbed the TFL. I figured if it wasn't Arwen/Galadriel I could go grab the BFR & TBL as I'd seen some reports of those 2 spots being Sauron or Nazgul in boxes without Arwen/Galadriel.

Ended up with Arwen and Gold Gimli, so down to just GitD Galadriel and I just received confirmation that my BN.com order was finally delivered.

Well, hit another B&N at lunch and they had all their minis out on a shelf. Looked like 2 cases worth with a couple missing. No Nazgul weight in site. I guess I should be pleased that the weight for the Nazgul is so unique. No Arwens or Galadriels from what I could tell either.

When I went to the Barnes and Noble site I didn't see lord of the rings in minis, but after reading more here, I went back and typed in lord of the rings mystery minis and it came up. Bought 12. Fingers crossed.

Here's the funny part. I went go HT the other day and there was a fresh case. I pulled TLF, TBL and BRF. Also when the lady brought out the fresh case at BN, I did the same thing. It was only later on, I realized I pulled the wrong ones. I guess the sweet spots are different for common cases. I should have done more reading. Oh well. We will see what comes in the mail. Only need GITD GALADRIEL, LURTZ AND EOWYN.

I did pull nazgul, merry, gollom from those if that helps. From BN

The HT was harder to say because I pulled 3 more as well. Pulled a saruman, gandalf, legolas, gimli, aragorn and frodo.

I'm done with HT multiple boxes. IF I find a new case, I'm only pulling the TFR and that's it. I will wait for the prices to come down and buy them loose.

I found some of the normal ones today and picked one up. I told myself this one fells like a nazgul, so I bought it and it was. I'd say the weight is unique. lol

Not the best :-/
Two Aragorns, one Boromir, a Merri, a Pippin, and a Gollum. I needed Gollum and Merry though, so at least it wasn't a lotal loss.

Anyone have extras of invisible Frodo and gold Gimli they're looking to unload?

Ordered 12 from B&N online, they didn't come in the original big box like I was hoping, and I ended up with FOUR Sams :(

The rest were Gold Gimli, Invisible Frodo, Aragorn, Gollum, Gandalf x2, Boromir x2.

5 duplicates out of 12, not great odds, but glad I got two exclusives!

My B&N order was very similar to yours. I ordered ten and got four Sam, one Gold Gimili, two Gandalf, two Saruman, and one Gollum.

However, I did score a GITD Galadriel and Invisible Frodo in-store. lol

Anyone have an extra Eowyn?????? The last one I need to complete my set.

I've just joined a couple of Facebook minis groups but it doesn't look very promising. Eowyn and lurtz are on everyone's list and there are sales maximum limits so I'm thinking not many people are willing to sell that low. Wishful thinking.

Seeing how I'm completely new to this as far as minis go, What is the deal with these ? Will they do a so called series 2 with some new figures and some older figures from the first release ? Or will they just stop cold after a few months or when they sell off all stock. What has been the norm with minis?

I'm more of a researcher than a jumper when it comes to collecting. If I had it to do over, I would buy lots off ebay for much less than buying blind boxes. My wife is a HUGE Lord of the rings fan. Twice a year, I buy her a troll hoard. Christmas and because mothers day is really close to her birthday, (sometimes the same day) she gets all kinds of goodies. She was really excited when she first saw these, she bought 2 boxes and pulled pippin and boromir. It kind of blew up from there. I bought a case on pre order and made out well. But after that, double after double.

Of course when you only need a couple, it gets harder to finish. Patience is always a virtue when collecting however, I'm not sure about releases and time lines of availablility.

Any experienced feedback will be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Kevin

Top layer, front right corner. That's the spot for the HT exclusives, it seems. I pulled Lurtz and the Witch King from that spot so I can only assume that means Eowyn is in that same one.

I got the first of my HT orders in today. This one was for the non-exclusives, which I'd ordered by mistake thinking they were the exclusive minis. It ended up working in my favor, though. I got a Nazgul. I'd ordered 10 minis (they canceled one from my order), and out of that 9 I got the Nazgul, 3 Gimlis, two Aragorns, Gandalf, Sam, and Frodo. The commons were all dupes for me, but at least I only paid $36 for the 9 minis thanks to hot cash. I weighed all the minis before opening, and the Nazgul was 30 grams for me.

Seeing how I'm completely new to this as far as minis go, What is the deal with these ? Will they do a so called series 2 with some new figures and some older figures from the first release ? Or will they just stop cold after a few months or when they sell off all stock. What has been the norm with minis?

Any experienced feedback will be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance
Kevin

If they do a second series, it will be new figures. They may have the same characters for some of them in the second series, but they'd look different (different poses, different clothes, etc). Typically we have no idea if a second series will be made until Funko makes the announcement, or there's a leak somewhere and word gets out before it's officially announced. There's also no telling what the ratios will be like in future series. Game of Thrones, for example, had 1/144 exclusives in their first series of minis (which I don't think Funko is doing that rarity anymore), some 1/36s and 1/72s in the second series, and then the third series was all 1/12 for the ratios. So you didn't have to worry about finding rares.

Hot Topic exclusives are always tough for minis because after a while, they stop getting in new shipments and once their inventory is exhausted, that's it. Which is why the secondary market for HT exclusive minis is always far higher. There's no telling how many times stores will be re-stocked, or how long they'll last online. I always try to jump on HT exclusives as soon as I can because of that uncertainty.

Your best bet for finding what you want is looking for case layouts, or weights so you can use a small scale. Some collectors frown on using layouts/weights, but honestly, I use them myself so I don't end up with dozens of common minis that I can't get rid of. You can find layouts on youtube, instagram, and in this group. Some facebook groups do not allow layouts or weights to be posted. Myself and a couple of other people have posted the layouts for these minis that we know so far, and some have posted weights for the exclusives/rares.

So it sounds like I'm too late to the party. If they do a 2nd series, I will pay alot more attention to HT. Not sure if I will see anymore HT cases. Has anyone pulled eowyn or lurtz from online HT purchases or is this a complete long shot?

I picked up my online orders of four from HT and four from Barnes today. The four HT ones were all dupes, no exclusives. #-o The four from Barnes had 3 I needed - Gollum, Pippen and Glow Gal. She's got a really rough texture, it's kinda cool.
