How do you store your Pop!s?

Postby cmasicampo » Sun Oct 22, 2017 9:33 pm

So I’ve finally reached the point where I have no more room to comfortably keep all my Pop’s in my apartment and need to make space for the many more I plan to add to my collection. I’ve also decided to get an offsite storage unit to help control things.

Any helpful tips from other Funatics about how best to store Pop’s and be more efficient in using space? Thanks in advance for the advice. :freddy3:

I bought bookcases from Walmart for $20. They fit 36 pops each where you are able to see the whole pop or 64 if you turn the pop sideways. I also bought some shelves today also. I am on the fence if I am going to start collecting out of box because I am running out of room.

We just got some shelves today. We put ours in display cases in each room in our home. We have way too many pops!

Best way be OOB collectors and condense boxes and store them away. You can fit a ton of pops into display cases. If you ever need to sell them, you have the box to put them back in

Unfortunately, me and my lady still live in an apartment so I have to keep them in cabinets and filled in bookcases. As soon as we get our house, my man cave will be covered!

I live in a small, two bedroom apartment. My pops are all OOB and on floating picture frame shelves, on book shelves and in two display cases in our living room and dining room area. I could never display my pops in box, let alone put them away where no one would see them, otherwise, why have them? That is my personal preference though, and I'm at almost 380 pops.

I keep all of my boxes, un-flatted in the top shelf of my bedroom closet, stacked up against a wall in my bedroom and used as risers on the book shelves and display cases. I hope to move to a bigger place in a couple years, so I refuse to get rid of the boxes for now.

The only time I'll ever hide my pops away will be when I am prepping to move and pack them, but that's just me, I know a handful of people who pack some of their collection and cycle them out, I just personally could never do that.

I use the long and short black shelves from IKEA that you can easily mount on the wall they fit pop boxes perfect in a soft case protector.

First I will say that it's ridiculous that my collection has gotten so absurdly large that I've had to resort to this, but here is what I do:

When the piles of Pops start freaking me out, I buy some of these bins from WM:

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Sterilite-48 ... x/13220041

A bin will hold 20 Pops. I get a large marker and mark the bin number on all 4 sides of the bin near the top. I get out my list and write the bin number, and underneath it in pencil I write down every Pop that I put in that bin. I write the Pop number, then the name of the Pop, then I list if it's an exclusive of some kind.

I have shelving in the garage that I put the full bins on in numerical order. I have space for around 60 bins I think, and if I need to I can add another shelving unit for another 20 or so. I seriously hope I never max all that out, my collecting problem is big enough as it is lol

Anyway it's a great system, even though my list is hand-written I can scan it fairly quickly and locate a Pop, then it's a simple matter of pulling that bin number to retrieve the Pop. Of course you can also do the list in Excel or something, that would make it even quicker to scan for something.

My biggest problem is keeping up with all the new purchases, they tend to pile up all over the bedroom before I get tired of it and put them away.

Wow, that is very complicated, yet detailed. Since I am approaching 400 pops, I can see the need to do something like this, although I have yet to put any of mine away and don't plan to. It's a shame storage boxes are NEVER perfectly square though. They always curve at the bottom or even if not curved, the top is always wider than the bottom, it's so strange.

I have a lot out on display too, and I would much rather have them ALL out on display. But I don't have room for it! So I keep putting them in bins. But honestly I'm getting tired of it, and asking myself what good they do me sitting in bins. I have been cutting back on purchases lately because of it.

Yeah it is seriously aggravating! In these particular bins I can get 8 in the bottom and 12 in the top. The way they fit in there is a little wonky too, I actually have sketches I have to refer to in order to stack them in right. They fit in there snug enough not to move around, but loose enough not to cause box damage so it works pretty well for storage.

I keep my Pops in sturdy cardboard boxes. So far, it's working well for me. I'd recommend 20 x 20 x 20 boxes.

You will save a LOT of room if you go Out of box. A shelf will typically hold 2-3x as many figures without the boxes.. and then you can easily remove the inserts and fold the boxes down along the seams, storing them in plastic bins.

Oooo! A bin discussion! I haven't stored any of my Pops away in bins just yet, but I do store other toys and collectibles!

I think I like this type of bin the best, personally:

Image

https://www.target.com/p/sterilite-174- ... nk=sametab

I like it for these reasons:

  • Has a gasketed seal. May be overkill, but I like having it somewhat air tight sealed to avoid as much moisture and dust from getting in.
  • Has a top that comes off and latches hold onto it. I've had bins with lids that flip open/closed for many years that eventually had the lids collapse inward (which damages the contents) or come completely off from wear and tear. The top has more surface area instead of a opening in the middle that helps protect the contents when stacking bins.
  • Clear. I guess arguments could be made that an opaque bin prevents sunlight from damaging the contents, but I tend to store my bins in places with little sunlight so that problem becomes moot. I find it more convenient to be able to peer inside the contents from the outside easier than reading labels (although labels are still recommended).

Now the bins get more expensive because of these, but personally I'll pay for the protection after getting burned by cheaper ones.

I still like to look at other alternatives, so if you guys have any other recommendations for storage bins, please share!

I’m a mixture of in and out of box, but I’m running out of space too. I have about half of my Walking Dead pops stored in plastic bins in my basement. I also keep all of my empty boxes stored away. For my OOB displays I have some book cases and a couple baseball bat display cases.

I keep about half of my collection on an ikea shelf and stacked on a dresser. The other half is all star wars which has become too difficult to keep up with, so I have them in two under-bed storage boxes. I have a storage unit, but I've been holding off sending my pops there out of fear that they'd one day end up on an episode of storage wars.

Most of my pops are OOB on a variety of shelves/cases/risers to help break up the space. Some of the empty boxes I've collapsed the boxes and stacked the inserts (labeled) in a tub to help make room. The OOB pops are organized by certain themes.

I have both in-box, and oob. As other people say, oob pops take less space. I put them in display cases, floating shelves, and some inboxed are against the wall(not tall). I live in 1 bedroom apartment with 300+ pops, and that do fine so far.

I have a storage question too for oob collectors. How do you keep the plastic part if you flat out the box? They also stack chunky, so I just leave my boxes as they are.

Mine are all stacked 2 high on 4 shelves. I can only really display the front row of each shelf so I typically rotate them around to keep it fresh. I have a separate shelf for the more expensive stuff. It's a large floating shelf I got from ikea. It can fit about 3 high and 15 across in pop stacks. I'm running out of room too lol

I remember Yoko on the Funkast saying that she flattens the boxes, but keeps the plastic insert, making sure to put a post-it note of what Pop it belongs to on it and then puts them in a bin I think.

I have gone to retailers before and asked if they have any pop shipping boxes that I can grab from them. They look at you like you're nuts for walking away with their garbage, but you can grab a few nice boxes that perfectly hold 6 pops. Write in sharpie the contents of each box and stack them away somewhere.

Otherwise, some art in the closet and some are stacked on shelves behind pieces that I have on display.

We don't display at all, there just isn't any room for all of our various and sundry collections, so we pack 100% of them away in 50-gallon storage boxes that we get from Walmart (used to get them from K-Mart, but Walmart is cheaper). We seal all of the ventilation holes so bugs can't get in and stack them in the garage. For all of our action figure collectibles including Funkos, we have 37 of them. They hold about 100 standard Funkos each, so that's not bad.

Doesn't it get as thick as stacking boxes normally? Pops have different shapes so that taking plastic inserts out doesn't seem to save a space... does it actually save spaces? :-k

I have to admit, I'm super curious, do you plan on displaying them down the road, or never? Just wondering why you'd want to collect something like a Pop that is made to be displayed, and yet don't display them. I absolutely mean no disrespect when I ask this, just to be clear, since you can't see my face as I type this, lol. Just really wondering what the purpose of your collection is if you don't show them off I guess. I've been collecting for over three years and you are the first person to say they don't display at all. :D

For me, a lot of my stuff can't be displayed properly because I just don't have the room. But I do want to have them just to say that I have them, or to check off a list. There can be different objectives when it comes to collecting, and collecting to display is totally one way of many to go about it!

Only have a few out in my room, randomly stacked.

Def need to display them better.

Sadly, most of mine are in storage bins as well. I'd prefer to have them out on display and recently I've been doing a better job about having a rotation of Pops I bring to display at work. I've told myself that I'll have a rotation at least once a month and so far I've been keeping up on it and it's great to have them out! :D

I have a huge pile of pops that I'm unable to file away in my display that are sitting on my kitchen table right now. I'm almost never home so it doesn't bother me, but it does kill me that I have like 25 pops purchased over the past 3 weeks lol.

I need to get a new display shelve soon. thinking about going with the ikea laika. right now I'm rocking with two detolfs. in the meantime though I think it's time to invest in a tote.

I am a teacher, and every week I rotate in a new Pop by my desk at the front of the classroom. It usually sparks some conversations with students. So far, Pennywise has been popular, but Bob Ross was the big favorite.

I'm OOB and throw all boxes and inserts away. I use Ikea shelves and ikea detolfs display cases. Also have a bunch of random nooks and crannies to put them. If you're seriously investing into a storage locker to keep your pops in I gotta be honest. I wouldn't even bother buying them if they're not being displayed or enjoyed.

I think I like this type of bin the best, personally:

That's actually a really good suggestion. I have seen other collectors who use multiple bins and stack them on top of each other say that the "flimsy non-locking lid" bins caused their pops to get squished. This seems like a good solution. Have you tried stacking multiple bins of this version on top of one another?
