Pops addicting?

Postby jagpop » Fri May 19, 2017 1:00 pm

I'm a relatively new collector. Been collecting since about 2015. It all started for me by buying a few Pops at my local swapmeet (Santa Fe Springs for all you SoCal Funatics). I was not hooked yet. I had maybe 5 in my collection and it was mostly Iron Man Pops. I had just seen 3 IM movies that weekend and I think that's why I bought them. I had no idea what Pops were nor who Funko was. Then my friend tells me about Comikaze and I got my first taste of a bigger selection of Pops. I got Stan Lee superhero and the platinum one. Its been downhill since for my wallet. I can't really pin point to exactly why they are so addicting. It could be an Exclusive, Chase, GITD or just a common, but I really enjoy the heck out of each and every one of my Pops. Plus, this hobby has opened the door to meeting some really cool peeps.

What are some of the reasons you are addicted to Pops?

Well, I collect Pops because they're, well, cute, especially the Disney Princesses and female characters in general. And I'm a collector at heart. I collect not only for myself but my loved ones.

They are really cute. And I enjoy the simplistic design of some of the original ones. They are getting fancier by the day.

That, Pops are! Yes, I agree with you there. I've noticed that while the head remains the same, other details such as arms, clothing, and the like are of better quality these days.

I find pop collecting fun. A lot of the times, it's mostly nostalgia. I look at my pops and remember the connection I had with them at some point in my life. I use to collect toys as a kid and pop collecting as an adult, is reminiscent of that.

Good point. Nostalgia is definitely part of it. Seeing my Robocop Pop brings me back to my childhood. Dead or alive...you are coming with me. :D

I agree w/ this, as I was originally drawn to ones I had as a kid (superheroes, Star Wars, MOTU, etc.). As an "old man" now, I can feel a little more comfortable searching for Pops vs. action figures. Though I'm spending way more time in the toy aisles of Walgreens/Walmart/Target than is probably socially acceptable ;)

I feel like I was totally under control about my first year of collecting. Only picked up pieces I REALLY loved probably only had maybe 20-25 that year. And then I joined this forum. You guys are awesome but a totally bad influence. Now I have over 800 things and I need to purge stuff so I have room to buy even MORE stuff. Also, Funko has been coming out with some pretty incredible new stuff and incredible new lines - the Mystery Minis, Pint Sized Heroes, Dorbz and Rock Candy. I mean, I guess I never had a change. Hello, my name is Merri and I am addicted to Funko lol

I feel like it went downhill pretty quickly for me. I guess I've always been a collector and I still only buy stuff I really like... but Funko keeps coming out with so many awesome things, my collection just keeps growing. I think calling it an addiction wouldn't be a stretch by any means — especially since I find myself feeling pretty proud when I manage to resist the urge to buy something that's cute/cool but doesn't fit my collection or fandoms.

I agree. I really like the Mystery Minis. They are really well made and take up a lot less space.

Since I've started collecting, I would say I went through varying levels of addiction. When I first started I bought anything and everything that caught my eye. Then I only focused on certain lines. And now I try to set my sights on a single pop at a time (usually something vaulted or hard to find) and just buy some other pop every now and then.

I'm to this point also. Money is an issue but mostly space. I'm starting to run out of display areas and room in my closet. Although, I will be donating a lot of my Pops from when I first started this Winter Season. That should hopefully free up some real estate.

I'm addicted because they make these for all the shows I watch (South Park, Flash, Arrow, the 100, Rick & Morty) and others. Also they make Marvel ones, and I LOVE MARVEL!!!!! I try to stick to shows and movies I really like or games I play, but I can't control how many I buy and how often haha. I do love each and every one I own!!

Exactly. Before, I wasn't aware of all the exclusives and drop dates. Now that I know about them I'm like, "Well I need that. And that. And that." lol

Those drop dates is what is making my wallet thin...lol. Before I use to see them "Out of Stock." Now, I have a heads up and am ready for when they go live. It's a vicious cycle. Another HT drop...don't mind if I do...lol.

Yup yup. And sometimes there are exclusives that I don't even need for myself but then I buy "just in case somebody else needs it". And then if they don't, I become the proud new owner of something I'm only slightly into. lol

Saying I'm addicted would be an understatement lol Like Priscilla once I joined the forum I started buying a loooot more stuff. It's a lot more fun interacting with a bunch of other Funatics so it makes the buying come quicker and more frequent. I also tend to find myself buying a bunch of stuff to help out friends which is part of the fun.

I'm not even sure when my Pop addiction took firm hold. Probably the summer of 2014. I was taking some time off of work and found myself devoting an increasingly large amount of time to looking up information regarding Pops. At this point, I don't know and don't want to know how much I've spent on Pops and Funko related products! :roflmao:

I collect POPs because I used to collect action figures, but some time around 2012-13 they took a giant nosedive in quality. Still wanting toys of my favorite characters, I went to Funko. Here I am, 4-5 years later and I'm still getting POPs.

I think that once I actually discovered Funko as a company and a community it got super addicting. Before, it was just products and I would pick the occasional POP or two, but once I discovered Funko as company I knew all of the different products and lines and was always up to date on whatever the newest reveals and releases were. Then came the community. The ability to discuss and debate products brought it to a whole new level. i am now always on here chatting! I also think that subscribing to Marvel Collector Corps fueled the addiction because it made getting at least 1 POP a scheduled thing.

This is what it might lead too also for me eventually. There are way too many "commons" of what I like. Maybe instead, I'll just keep the ones that gitd or have blood splatter. I dislike putting anything in storage but it's kinda nice too when you reopen that stored box of Pops and seeing what you have again. It's like getting a new Pop all over again. :colors:

The hunt is the best part. Sometimes I enjoy tracking down a pop and the journey of getting it more than the pop itself!

I say we all blame Brett. It's all his fault. He is the king of "Buy all the Things!" and has infected us lol

What grails are you buying? Besides the entire set of Cowboy Bebop protos. lol

I still need Holo Maul and PA Vegeta to name a few. I've been trying to pry them away from edmomo for a while now. Lol

We can all blame Brett for getting us to buy Dorbz that's for sure. He's that guy that wears a trench coat in dark alleys with a bunch of Funko merch underneath it trying to slang it to passerbys.

For me: I just like how they look. However, I only go after what I like and/or super limited. If I collected everything that was out there or that is coming out, I would be in trouble--as in, not having enough room to store things. I also collect statues (mainly 1/4 scale) and HT stuff, so I have to be careful. Lol Overall, if it doesn't hurt you money wise, plus you have enough space to show off the collection, go have fun. Better this than doing drugs, if you want to look at it that way.

I enjoy the hunt. While not specifically looking for one POP, I enjoy simply coming across ones I've not seen before. My dad collected Red Wing pottery simply by picking up a piece here and there... I guess that's the spirit I have in me too. I enjoy stopping at shops in small towns just to see what I see. I've not gotten lucky to find a grail or anything yet, but I'm lucky to be doing something that I enjoy!
