Cleaning/Taking care of Protos
Hey there fellow Fanatics! Had a few quick questions here:
What is the best way/method to clean a proto? Are there certain products that work better out there than others? Plus, is there anything you can spray/apply on your proto to avoid smudges or discoloration in the future?

Re: Cleaning/Taking care of Protos
Time does what it does (discoloration of white protos). Craig (Alleycat) has the best handle on caring for protos. He's got a jillion of them.
I use a dust cloth to wipe them down from time to time. Also a can of air if you don't want to touch them.

PS - I wouldn't apply anything to them. Liable to cause them to discolor.
Eyeprints are more damaging than smudges.

As much as they cost, you'd think they'd be dishwasher safe.

Re: Cleaning/Taking care of Protos
Protos are pretty hardy. Sometimes just a hand washing with mild detergent (I use Dawn dishwashing liquid - if it's good enough for oily ducks....) will clean up a proto. I also use an old soft bristle toothbrush for stubborn discolorations and crevices. I have even used scrub brushes for larger protos.
If that doesn't work, then I'll make a gooey paste with water and baking soda, then gently scrub with a sponge and the toothbrush.
For more heavy duty cleaning, I'll use Soft Scrub cleanser that contains bleach. Then rinse thoroughly.
I know many have had success with the magic erasers, but I don't care for them.
These cleaning methods have worked for me on white and different color protos. Also works for "sticky" protos. Just be gentle if the proto has small parts such as swords. There has been no consequence of using the Softscrub with bleach over the years (at least for me).
As far as protective coating, I know of nothing that I would recommend.
A clean proto is a happy proto...

I frequently use Testors Matte Varnish to seal miniature soldiers that I paint and prevent discoloration/oil from damaging the acrylic.... this is also a sealing technique used by painters in general.
Im curious if the spray would do the same thing for bare vinyl? Has anyone testes this?

Craig probably wouldn't mind being soaped up and slathered on protos.

Its all about Dawn dish soap its mild and you dont need alot. I have used vinegar if the smudge is stubborn but 99% of the time Dawn saop and some rubbing alcohol and cleans up everything perfectly.
