Passing on a Pop

Postby Pmatias83 » Thu Mar 24, 2016 9:52 am

Hi All, I've been doing this more and more lately and I'm wondering how many of you have. Do you ever pass on a pop knowing that most likely they'll release another figure of that same character? Some examples would be, passing on the Luna Lovegood pop in hopes they'll release a pop of her in one of her crazier outfits. I kind of wish I did the same with the Kylo Ren unmasked and waited for the more dynamic Kylo Ren figure with the face scar.

I've learned that you can never "assume" anything with Funko to be honest! If you like a piece, then grab it! I've seen\heard too many stories of people passing up figures they like at a retail store and then buying them later from the secondhand market for a lot more money! Who can have too many Lunas??

This is true, but I feel like for the bigger lines such as Star Wars and Harry Potter there's always a few of just about all the main characters. I've reached the point where I just can't get them all due to space so I'm trying to be more selective lol.

I'm one of those who's I've learned the hard way passing on a pop is never good, especially at retail price. If they later come out with a cooler variant I like a lot more than the one I already have, I try to trade it away or gift it someone else. However, if it's a character I really like I don't mind having multiple variants.

A lot of the Disney POPs. They were everywhere and so readily available. I just thought I could get them later.

I've held off on a lot, like the first gen Black Widow and War Machine, which I am glad I did since the newest versions are a lot better. I've lost with that risk too, but mostly thinking the Pop would be in stores for longer, not that there would be new versions.

But yeah, to answer your question for some Pops I do wait on some for better version to hopefully come out.

I also have some classics like Captain America that I don't need a new version of, I just like the old style. :D

I've been feeling a lot like this with Star Wars. I don't need Poe with a helmet, Poe without a helmet, the eventual Poe with the brown jacket, etc etc. I've gotten to the point where I just want 1 great pop of every character. Its just more enjoyable for me.

It's a dangerous game to pass on pops. I've done that with regret a few times. In this case, I could see them do many variations of Harry, Hermoine, and Ron, but you never know with the secondary characters.

I find myself being a lot more selective on the Pops I buy. For example, this past weekend I found a Butt-Head at a local CD/DVD/Video Game exchange store. It was shrink wrapped which shot up red flags for me. It was "collector" priced, but by no means was it price gouge priced for this particular Pop. Also, if I am going to buy Butt-Head, I want to buy Beavis at the same time, because finding those two separately can be tough.
My name is Aaron...Many call me Stu...it is a long story.

When I was in NZ late last year, I went to a comic store. And in my defence I have to say, I wasn't into POP!s all that much at the time, so I passed on almost every HTF Disney and Marvel/DC POP! there is right now, because I was only interested in a lonely Invisible Bilbo on the shelf... and not the hatless Gandalf next to it, or the Aquaman, Hawkman, Notorious B.I.G. ... arghhhhh I'll stop. ](*,) ](*,) ](*,)

Haha I know what you all mean. I think its hard to predict what's going to be hard to find one day. Still though, I think my point is that I don't want so many versions of 1 character. I don't pass on any one character, I just pass on the many versions of the same character. But like you all said, you never know when that 1 character actually becomes hard to find and that's the only version they ever come out with.

I did SW:TFA complete, but I've been picking and choosing my favorite MCU characters; e.g., GITD Hulk, Action Captain America and Giant Man have been recent additions, but I probably won't get more Captain America's or Ant Man.

Tough game. Buy what you want. If another variant comes out buy that and then sell the other.

I've passed on plenty of pieces as they weren't exclusives. I want a black widow for a long time but they were always released as commons until the GameStop exclusive with shield.

I'm so picky in terms of which Pops I buy that I already know in advance if I want it or not. If I want it, I'll buy/pre-order it. If not, someone else can enjoy having it in their collection. I would suggest buying a Pop you like if you see it, because there's a high chance you won't be able to find it as easily next time. You can always sell it on eBay and get your money (and maybe more) back. Or keep it as trade bait.

I get pretty much everything I want right away, but I have to be very selective about what I get now due to space. Missing out on something doesn't bother me much though.

I was at the store one day and was looking at some POPs. My nephew was browsing the card games and the POPs were nothing all that new. I wasn't collecting back then, just to clarify. Anyway, I grabbed a Renly Baratheon and joked to my nephew about how I won't buy this and watch it soon cost a small ransom. Well now I collect and have all the Game of Thrones except for Renly Baratheon.

I seem to have no luck with guessing when to hold off and when to buy. In the beginning of my collecting last year, I was in frenzy-mode buying every pop I liked. Now that collection is running out of display space, I'm more cautious. Still haven't figured out the Hot Topic exclusives. I have exclusives from a year ago that I can still buy at the store now (Black Lantern Flash). While another I saw once and haven't seen since (Underwater Aquaman), kicking myself for not jumping at it. If you see it, buy it. That's the safest bet.

Back when I first started collecting, before I really knew what was what, I happened upon two Nick Fury Pop!s at a Walgreens. Had no idea he was worth what he was at the time (was just after his price started to skyrocket) and wasn't into Marvel, so I passed on picking them up.

I passed on a BB-8 at Walmart before the holidays thinking he would be widely available. I tried to find one after Christmas and nothing, only online and for double the price. Luckily I found one at a local shop last month but Funko had me worried. Also passed on the TFA Princess Leia because I wanted a General Leia and luckily Funko is coming out with one later this year.

There's a few characters I get all variants for, like Harley Quinn and the Joker but I think I'm gonna pass on a bunch on the star wars variants. It's funny cause I only started doing that now that I passed 100 lol

Passed on an Amazing Spiderman 2 pop going for 17 BIN on ebay a few days ago and I'm still kicking myself. I hesitated because the shipping alone was 7 and the price on it was 10. Literally hesitated for 10 seconds and then it was sold. :(

My local HT just got a restock of BB-8 today. Since the movie comes out next week, I wouldn't be surprised if more start popping up. Hopefully you haven't paid higher prices for it yet.
