POP VINYL - A BREIF HISTORY

Postby Chriso7 » Tue Feb 09, 2016 2:25 am

Pop! Vinyl : A Brief History 35780

[A bit of background on the SDCC 2010 Pieces/ The origin story of Pop! Vinyl]

In SDCC 2010 Funko showcased a product called Funko Force 2.0. It was the mini spinoff of Funko Force. They came in bubble packaging that collectors now commonly refer to as "clamshells". The first to be released in the product line of "Funko Force 2.0" where 4 DC Figures, all exclusive to San Diego Comic Con 2010. They were:
35761
Batman (Blue Suit) - 1/480
Batman (Metallic Blue) - 1/240
Batgirl (A Black Suit) - 1/240
Green Lantern (GITD) - 1/240

Here are some pictures of them below: (this is what we call clamshells)

35760357593575735758

These were transferred into boxes by collectors, =D> thats how we get these here:
35756357553575435753
Therefore the clamshells are the first every pops and the originals, the boxes are the same pops, still the first pops, just different packaging.

During the show Brian also pulled out a bag of prototypes, that he said packaging hadn't been deciding on for get. These were the very first Pop! Series. They were later released in the boxes we know today. They were Series one of Heroes. The DC Comics line, featuring Batman, and his friends and foes. :alien:

Here's the picture from SDCC 2010 of the box less protos Brian had:

35762
Here is the original concept of the clamshell boxes and Funko Force 2.0 Line:
3576335764357653576635767

Here are the boxes they were the released in, the beginning of a series called Pop! Vinyl (Woo! Throws hands in the air, Screams out loud and cheers) \:D/

Series 1:
357693577235768357713577735770

Series 2:
35774357733577635775

They all also came with a 1:36 ratio of having a metallic chase
3577835779
(First ever Pop! Chases)

And thats the story of the Pop! Vinyl.

I don't think the boxed clamshells are the work of collectors, I'm pretty sure Funko did the other half of those runs in boxes

If Funko would've stuck to the clamshell packaging, I wonder how many more OOTB collectors there would be?! Thank you for the Funko Pop history thread!

I skipped SDCC in 2010 and 2011 (only 2 I've skipped in the last 11 years)....missed out on a lot of cool pieces those 2 years, I'm pretty sure I would have gotten those had I gone...or at least had tried to get them.

When I first started collecting I searched everywhere for the clamshell pops. It was a big relief when I found out they didn't exist lol

I only learned about Funko and their products over the past year and some change, needless to say clamshell was entirely foreign to me. I looked up clamshell, Funko Force 2.0 and more I'm sure to find them, but to no avail could I seem to find anything buying wise goes. That's how I knew these were special and the people that have them are very much the same! I don't expect to own one probably ever, but I do expect to continue on buying Pops for a very long time!
