What to Collect?

Postby Karla » Thu Aug 13, 2015 4:03 pm

Just wondering what everyone's opinion on what a newbie should collect is? Would it be sacrilegious not to collect everything that is released? I just want to get Pops that represent things I like, or that peak my interest.

That's exactly what you should get.....what you like. There's no set rules about which Pop!s you should buy. Have fun!!!

Get what you like. Don't buy Pops just because they're rare or exclusive or you'll just end up with a bunch of stuff that doesn't actually interest you.

When I first started it was like all Pixar, then I accepted marvel/Star Wars bobble heads. Eventually marvel started to release so many pops so fast I had to stop Disney and Star Wars. Now I am mostly Marvel but still get random pops sometimes.

Collect what you want, can always switch collection around! Part of the fun.

Don't start a collection based on something that other people are collecting. Go with what you like; it will hold more personal value in the long run. Also, you don['t have to get every single Pop! in a series. If there are only one or two that you like, it is okay to not get the other ones. However, if you are loaded with money, get everything.

I used to buy every marvel dc disney pops that comes out (cause I need all the numbers in the set) however, after some time, I decided to just collect the ones I really like. Now, I have pops from marvel dc disney tv movies etc and i'm happier this way.

I recommend getting a Batman. Any Batman will do. I just feel like every collector needs a Batman in their life :-D

But, seriously, just browse around and buy the ones that you like. Personally, I try to stick to Iron Man and Batman, with the occasional random purchase. Their are no rules or guidelines, just have fun!

Oh, and pace yourself! You don't want to get burned out too quickly.

HAHA shogunjlips!!

No one can REALLY tell you what to collect. Collect what means something to you, favorite tv shows, something from your past etc. Some people only buy what they think looks cool. It's really up to you to decide how you want to collect. I personally get the series that mean something, and I am also one of those people that when I started collecting Pops I bought a few exclusives that I thought were neat, but now I kind of regret...although I don't have many. :D

It can definitely be overwhelming on what to collect with so man Pop! figures to choose from. I think that's why a lot of new collectors ask this question. Some people collect all because they just love the figures regardless of the genre. I think the best route is to collect what you love, you won't regret what you buy because it's something you like and have some kind of connection to. Personally I used to only collect DC and Marvel and I branched out to other genres. After awhile I couldn't keep up anymore (especially my wallet lol) so I basically am back to DC and Marvel, and some Star Wars =)

Well aside from what you like I suggest picking up figures that look interesting. Last year I bought some that looked cool at the time and now I actually started watching the show and I was glad I owned that figure because now it's really high priced.

I'm just collecting what I like; which mainly falls into the category of Disney and Game of Thrones, but there's others that I like as well like the Harry Potter, Doctor Who and the upcoming Friends and OUAT series. In my opinion, your spending your hard earned money on these figures, so you should buy ones you like - unless you like the idea of having every single one of a series, for example there's some Disney ones I'll never buy because I don't like the character but I know that if I was in to having the entire series then I probably would buy them anyway. It's up to you.

Not unless you are mega uber collector Carol. She is the completist's completist, it has earned her the respect of all of us :) But no, it is most certainly not frowned upon to limit your collecting. Not many of us have the room to properly display every Pop that comes out. And you shouldn't collect Pops you have no interest in out of some false sense of loyalty. Funko is just as happy to sell you a few as it is to sell you hundreds, as long as you're buying -something- :-)

I definitely only stick to the characters that I like. I don't feel the need to buy all the characters in a series for the sake of completing the series, although sometimes it's tempting. I just pick up all my faves and leave the rest behind lol

If you collect entire series you'll run out of room to display your Pops! real quick O_o

You can't go wrong with collecting what you like. Unfortunately, I like too much. I'm a Disney mark and I watch a lot of movies. I would recommend that you don't go for what is the hot item right now (today) which is Harry Potter Quiddich Pop, unless you like that line. If you buy a lot that you don't like you're going to have buyers remorse and forced to try to sell a bunch of stuff.

I've been actively collecting Pops for about three years now, and my collection is only up to 78 as of right now. I've seen people on this board who started collecting six months ago whose collection is up to 200 or more now. I never feel like I'm "collecting wrong" because I'm very picky with the Pops I buy. In fact, I prefer having a "smaller" (I use that word loosely haha) collection because it more accurately represents what I like. When you look at my collection, you know that 95% of those characters are important to me in some way.

Long story short, like what everyone else said, there's no wrong way to collect. Just pick up what you want and enjoy them!

This reminds me of a friend of mine. Her career was her life and she was always stressed. I insisted she start spending some downtime on a hobby or two.
The next day she came to me with a printout of the "top 10 hobbies" she found online and asked me which I thought she would like. #-o

I agree with everyone who basically said stick with what you like. But this thread made me realize a few things...number one...I don't currently own ANY Batman Pops...my son has a few but I personally don't have any. Second, there are at least three TV shows I never watched before buying and being intriuged by the Pops related to the series...Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad and Sons of Anarchy...crazy but I liked and purchased the Pops for these shows without having watched any of them
