Marvel - Where to Start

Postby Greeryboy2410 » Mon Jan 26, 2015 4:39 pm

Hey all,

I'm going to start up my Marvel collection, and don't know where to start. I know everybody will say "pick what you like", but I love it all equally. I really dont know. I was thinking the Avengers would be a good starting point, but now I'm thinking X-Men. I'm stuck! Any reply appreciated :)

Really you can't go wrong if you are buying Marvel :) Ross has it right though, buy what you love!

If I had to pick though, I'd side with starting with Avengers.

My personal opinion would be to start with what's readily available as they are the easiest to find and the cheapest. You will find your collection growing quickly if you start off this way. From there decide for yourself if hunting down the variants or the really rare are worth finding. You might find that hunting down all the variants is a huge pain and not worth it. The main thing is to figure out what type of collector you are.

I'd probably start with the ones that are hardest to get - the older Pops are apparently discontinued, so try to get them before the price skyrockets (eg - Nick Fury is starting to go up in cost; if you want him, get him soon). Also look out for convention and retailer exclusives, there are some really cool designs out there! Again, they go up in price as they become harder to find. Pick up the newer releases (like the X-Men and AoU Avengers) as they are released and go on sale, and anything else you come across cheap.

I agree with this, IF you're going to be a completionist. The "retired" and HTF Pops are going to go up further in value so the sooner you get those the better.

I'd say get the low hanging fruit first, most bang for your buck. Establish that base and then head for the rarer ones you like. Once you scour and figure out which are more scarce you'll be able to prioritize. But most definitely get what you like.

I think I'll find myself doing that exactly. I'm going to start off with the winter soldier Cap, the Dark World Thor, and maybe an Iron Man 3 Iron man.
That'll leave me with money for the Vision and Ultron when they release. And maybe Hulk Buster. No. Definitely Hulk Buster

I want to get Nick Fury, but his price has already rose to around £40 or $50.

Maybe you'll get lucky with the "big" Marvel announcement today and they will re-release all the figures in non bobble head versions!

As an exclusive Marvel collector, I would recommend grabbing the Thor: TDW and Winter Soldier ones first. Any lines that are made for a movie tend to go out of production quicker.

Other than that, focus on getting some of the exclusives that are getting harder to find - Marvel exclusives shoot up in price pretty quickly.

Since they are the newest Marvel pops, X-Men would be easiest to start with since Hot Topic should have them all in stock, or other retailers like Barnes and Noble.

Though, as it was stated, you may want to stay with something that might be harder to find down the line. One of the first Pops I got was White Phoenix and Green Phoenix, which I'm glad I did since they are considerably more expensive and harder to come by now.

But with a major Marvel announcement coming soon, it seems like a good time to start collecting Marvel. Good luck!

I Just started off myself and have several Lines that I love Movies, Walking dead, Comics. I love Marvel more than DC since that is what I grew up on. So I been grabbing what I can at good prices first. Mostly the things I can grab a Hot topic and Barns and Noble. So I have the guardians line except Unmasked Starlord and almost all the X-men I found that made me happier since the the collection was larger quicker. But that was just me.
