My custom displays- 06-13 Rancor Pit finished!!- page 9

Postby treswright » Tue Sep 08, 2015 12:30 pm

03-10-16 update- as part of Funko moving the forums to a new server they had to drop the gallery so unfortunately all my old photos got scrubbed. I still have them stored safely on my home system so will try to move them over to my web site and repost them here. For now here is a current shot of my living room cases. They are nearly complete, I just have two more scenes to build to go on the bottom shelves.

Image

10-17-16 update- I've FINALLY gotten around to uploading some of the lost photos. It would be a huge task to go through the thread and figure out which picture goes with which post, so instead I will just post them all here in the first post. These are the photos of Jabba's throne room under construction and completed:

This is the Rancor Pit which was built later, but is right under the throne room diorama:

And here is the Walking Dead diorama:

01-02-2015 update- welcome to my thread showing my various Pop scenes and dioramas! This thread is in sequential order, as I create new scenes I don't update the first post about them, I create a new post within the thread with pics. So as you read through the thread you'll see the scenes from oldest to newest. if you've already seen the older scenes then you can skip to the end of the thread to see the newest updates. I hope you enjoy the journey :-)

I posted a sneak peak of this in the WD thread, but thought I would post a new thread on it in case anyone has questions about it so I don't muck up another thread with a bunch of off topic discussion :-) I've been collecting and building plastic model kits for many years and have made a couple of dioramas to display the models on. I was trying to come up with a unique way to display some of my Pops and thought hmmm, a diorama might be cool! I have these niches between my living room and bedroom that were very poorly lit and hard to see into, so that seemed like the perfect spot to create a little lighted display. And at the time I was working on my WD collection, so that became the theme :-)

I'm not sure how much or how little info any of you are interested in, so I'll just try and hit the high points and if you want further info on any of it please ask, I will be happy to answer.

Pretty much the entire diorama is scratch-built. The base is 1/2" foam core. The rock formations are plaster cloth over wadded up newspaper with some rock features cast in plaster using a rock mold for added texture/ detail. The plaster was painted with acrylics, then "talus" (the rock material) was applied over that along with the shredded grass material. The corn stalks and flowers were the only things I didn't scratch-build, I bought those pre-made from my local hobby store. The side and back panels are canvas-over-hardboard that were also painted with acrylics. The prison tower is scratch-built from foam core, paper, folder plastic (for the windows), wood dowels (handrails) and plastic sheet for the walkway. The prison fence and gate was made of a drywall repair screen glued over a wood dowel frame with some spruce extensions for the razor wire (which is picture hanging wire that was wrapped around a rod to give it that shape). In the show the fence is a weathered silver color, I actually wanted to match that but when I tested the paints it looked TERRIBLE so I ended up stripping it and just going basic black.

The figures are all unmodified production figures, all are the "bloody" variants except Daryl and Teddy Bear Girl neither of which were offered in a variant. I had to have Teddy Bear Girl on there even though she doesn't match because she is my all-time-favorite Pop :-) The only thing I added to the figures was the chains going from Michonne's fist to her pets.

Lighting is strip "natural daylight" LEDs, one strip is concealed behind the shelf lip above and the other is along the bottom edge mounted to an aluminum angle that also conceals the raw foam edge of the base. The strips were hooked up to a remote controlled device so the lights can be turned on and off via remote.

There is another shelf above and below this one that I also plan on building dioramas on, at this point I think one will be Batman-themed and the other will be Star Wars :-)

I hope everyone likes it!

Thank you Rob, Ed, Jon and HP for the kind words, you have me fired up to start the next one :-) I recently picked up the Luke & Wampa SDCC set and would like to do a cave with Luke hanging upside down like in the box, was just looking at blue LEDs to light the inside of the cave.

Jon, that sounds like an awesome display, a great showcase for your customs collection! I look forward to seeing it!!

Not criticizing or anything, but is there space to fit a POP! in the watch tower? Having the prison Glenn might be cool there if you have

Thank you Saul, Beto, Claire and Cody! I really appreciate all the good vibes all of you are sending my way :-)

Emcee, that's a cool idea! Unfortunately I didn't size the tower to hold a figure. I did the tower more as part of a 3-d backdrop because I was pretty limited on space in the niche this went in. The catwalk around it is only a inch wide.

So I have a couple of Ikea cases next to my diorama shelves and this weekend I moved some stuff out of one to make room for bringing out more of my WD collection. I also added LEDs to the case while I had everything out. The riser is made out of black foam core.

Wow, thank you all so much, you have no idea how great your comments make me feel, really makes it feel like it was worth the effort :-)

Here's what I've been playing with the last couple of days on and off. It's not quite finished, I have some red LED strips on order and will place them behind the buildings so that hopefully it'll cast a red glow and also light the windows. I hope so after all the effort I went through to cut all those tiny windows out lol

Unbelievable! These look so cool. I didn't realize the GB one was a skyscape at first and it got me thinking how cool a HP display with Hagrid in the middle and the other HP pops in a triangle of risers would be...

Thank you very much Pinkey, estrus and HPLove :-) HPLove, I don't collect HP Pops but that would be an awesome display idea for an HP collection! They would look killer on black risers with Hagrid as the centerpiece. And you know how I did the cityscape layers and will be putting LEDs behind them? How cool would it be to do a Hogwarts backdrop with some LED lighting? Some hardcore HP fan needs to do this! :-D

Thanks Diana! The lighting is blue LED strips, the layers of ice formations created an interesting effect though, makes it look like there's more than one color of lighting.
