How I'm sometimes drawn to Pops.. anyone relate?

Postby Servant of Sauron » Mon Jun 25, 2018 11:28 am

I feel most tend to be interested in some element of Pop culture and in turn want the specific "Pop" relating to it. Say.. I like Lord of the Rings of Game of Thrones.. so by default I'll want the characters I like. But sometimes I find myself buying Pops based of something that I have no interest in.. I'm just browsing and I see a really cool looking Pop and when I see and buy the Pop.. in turn, I sometimes actually get my interest sparked in it by the Pop.

For example, I bought two Mummy movie Pops recently (the two of the Mummy girl, Ahmanet or whatever she's called). I had seen it advertised but I never really payed much attention to the film.. but I saw the Pops and thought they looked really cool. I love all things Ancient Egypt so I first got the one where she's dressed up all pretty like an Egyptian princess and then I got the 'Mummy' one where she's presumably deceased (and come back to life) and covered in bandages. So I bought both of them. I since bought the movie and I'm looking really forward to seeing it. I maybe watch it tonight if I get time.

If I hadn't seen and ordered the Pops I likely never would have bought or seen the movie.. at least not for years anyways. It wouldn't have been on my to watch list anytime soon.

Does anyone else get the same? Do you have and interest in something first.. then buy the Pop.. like I imagine most do.. or does it work the other way sometimes, like I just described? :) Obviously everyone is different and their reasons vary.. I'm pretty much just curious does anyone do this.. same as I do.

Have a great day, guys and girls. :)

When I first started out, my interests defined the pops i bought. Then along the way I picked up on other licensed franchises such as MHA and actually downloaded and gave Overwatch a go because the pop range caught my fancy!

I definitely swerve from my main interests sometimes and buy a few Pops from universes I'm less familiar with, or I don't even care about. It's Always centered around my main fields of interests nevertheless : movies and television. But I think as a whole I like my collection to reflect my view of pop culture in general, not only stuff I absolutely love.

This happens to me quite a bit. I have several shelves in my collection that are completely random, but are Pops that have really cool sculpts or just appeal to me. So far none of my random purchases have got me really hooked on a new show or movie, but I could definitely see that happening.

The Book of Life collection was like that for me. I hadn't seen the movie yet, but they were absolutely gorgeous so I picked them up then watched the movie a few weeks/months later and fell even more in love with them. There are definitely times I'm drawn to the Pop! before the actual franchise.

When i first started, I was strictly on DC, Marvel, Disney and Star Wars. But then I started seeing some anime pops show up and I thought the details looked great, so i picked up a piece or two from a few anime. Next thing i know, I'm watching anime now LOL and i think it was mainly due to the pops! I can't get enough MHA, Black Clover, Tokyo Ghoul:Re, 7 Deadly Sins, etc!

I do this sometimes, though I won't buy the Pop(s) until I've actually seen the film. Most recently done it with The Book of Life, and bought both Maria and Manolo on Sunday, having enjoyed the film more than I expected. But the film made me like La Muerta less as I don't think it's particularly great compared to the character, despite the mass of detail (lack of expression, basically).
I personally enjoy this way of collecting as it does sometimes mean that seeing a cool Pop interests me in seeing a film (not often TV Shows) that I otherwise probably wouldn't bother with. I now have every intention of seeing Small Foot having seen the glams for those Pops.

I used to buy Pops based on how cool they looked rather than how I actually felt about the character/franchise. Nowadays I really can't do that simply due to finances and limited space.

But that's what I really dig about Pops, and my collection in particular. I've been collecting for nearly seven years, but I'm always curbing my collection to make it more tailor fit for me and my personal interests. It's gotten to the point where, if a stranger walked into my house and browsed through my entire collection, they'd have a very good idea as to what kind of a pop culture person I am and what kind of things genuinely interest me. To each their own, of course. I'd hate to tell somebody how they "should" collect, because then that defeats the purpose of this unique hobby. But this style of collecting is what makes Pops so fun for me to collect in the first place.
