Advice Needed - Received Damaged Metallic Doom

Postby booboo79 » Fri Dec 18, 2015 11:34 am

I haven't had the best of luck lately with ordering Pops online (Popcultcha and now eBay) :( Anyway...

I ordered a Metallic Doctor Doom (no sticker) on eBay. Paid $59.99 + $4.99 shipping. Pictures that came with the listing showed the Pop! to be in MINT condition and seller's feedback was 100%.

Received the Pop! in the mail. The outside of the shipping box was perfect. No dents/scratches whatsoever. Inside was a smaller shipping box (no dents/scratches) wrapped in bubble wrap which contained Doom. Amazing packing job to say the least.

Unfortunately, I opened the smaller shipping box to find a damaged Pop! box (see first 3 pics). I was SO bummed.

I contacted the seller and he thinks the damage was a result of shipping. I respectfully disagree due to the amazing packing job and the lack of damage/dents/scratches to the outside of the shipping box. Regardless, he's been REALLY nice and helpful. He offered that I keep the pop and he give me a partial refund of 15% (about 10.50).

What do you guys, the experts, think is a reasonable partial refund amount? I want this to be a fair solution for both parties, so your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much in advance for your time and advice. I am very grateful!

I don't wanna say the seller knowingly sold you a flawed piece, but if it was packed as well as you say it's a possibility. If I were you I'd ask for return for a full refund. Honestly I would accept no less as that is very significant damage and as a huge fan of that piece myself for that kind of dent. Even with the 15% refund he's still getting over $50 for it. Is he offering a return at all?

It all depends on how picky you are about boxes. If it doesn't really bother you then keep it or If youre an OOB collector. But to me the box is important when it's not a "common" piece. Also the value of it cuts in half if the damage is that much or there's no box. I also believe he knew the box had damage and returning $10 is not really worth it. If it's gonna bug you I would return it for a full refund and find a better one

Take a partial refund, display out of box for a month, during that month, fold that box flat and put it under a heavy book. Come back in a month and you're good to go LOL. I agree with the others, if the shipping box isn't damaged then there's no other way it could've got that damage in transit, happened before packing.

take the refund and get a replacement box from Gemini. If they no longer have them press it out low heat and a cloth it works you can flatten a record out so a box is easily done. In the meantime have a Kit Kat breath and know that the world is a wonderful place.

Damage had to already be there when it was packed, if it was packed as good as you say. I would return for a full refund. Thats just the in-boxer in me though.

As an in box collector..I couldn't accept anything other than a full refund. The seller should understand the definition of "Mint" because that means you expect a box as if it was hot off the assembly, undamaged.

It really depends how much you care about box condition. I have some in box and most OOB. My in box ones I just make sure they look mint from the front because they're stacked so I never see the sides or back. I'd say the price you got it for is a steal already, regardless of the box condition, and subtracting another 15% is another win.

No need to ask advice in cases like this, it's your money. Are you pleased with the purchase? If the answer is "no" open a case on eBay, return the Pop! in the same condition it was received, with delivery confirmation, and get a full refund (be sure to attach these same photos to your case). eBay sides with buyers 110% of the time. If you can live with the damage knowing what you paid, keep it. Sellers that sell high value items should know by now they need to add postal insurance due to eBay's harsh policies (seller is responsible for the item throughout shipping process so they have to own any mistakes the PO makes).

OK... I'm thread jacking a bit, but this bit of info that I see here from time to time...just because a buyer opens up a case on Ebay is does NOT automatically mean they will side with them. Every situation varies, but I have had a few cases opened against me as a seller on Ebay and they did NOT automatically side with the buyer. It depends on the situation and who's actually responsible. If all a person had to do to get a refund was open a case then at some point everyone who sells regularly on Ebay would eventually stop selling there. It depends on the conditions of the damage, the seller's record, the buyer's record etc. We do NOT have to "own" every mistake the PO makes and if it is their fault and we have a good record that backs that Ebay will refund on their own dime. People would be ripping Ebay sellers off left and right if the policies were completely slanted that way.

Does the OP have a pic of the back of the box in mint condition from the eBay ad?

I just want to thank all of you for the PM's and thread replies. Your advice and insight has been incredibly helpful. Still mulling a decision, but will def keep you all posted.

As requested by Emcee, here's a picture of the back that came with the eBay listing.

Thanks again everyone!

I had a similar situation recently where shipping box and packing was perfect but POP had crease across entire top of box. It was also sold as mint. So on that principle alone I was unhappy because I felt lied to. I contacted the seller politely asking to return for refund and they got very defensive quickly. I ended up opening case with eBay and they gave me full refund + return shipping label. I would agree with others and say do what you feel is best for you. If keeping it and accepting partial refund doesn't sit right, send it back.

It looks like he took a photo of a great box, and sent you one with a damaged box. The Funko box in the background looks like it says Metallic, so he probably buys in bulk. I would personally ask for a full refund and would send it back, since he knowingly deceived you and everyone else.

Since you said that there is not a sticker on the box if it was me I would take the refund, find a cheap Dr.Doom out somewhere with a good box and swap them. What you do with the extra Doom and busted box is up to you. Make a custom out of him (a nice repaint from the recent battle worlds maybe), return in busted box if you are a little more flexible on the moral compass. Then you get your refund, its cheaper and it really is the same box, looks just as good. I assume you keep at least partial of collection in a box since you are asking about it.
I collect Marvel, Star Wars, Pixar, Game of Thrones and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Name is exactly what is in my user name, Justin.

Sorry your experiences haven't been as favorable as mine. It's still no excuse for spreading misinformation. I certainly don't work for Ebay, but thousands of transactions later they've NEVER decided a case against me. If you're a professional and take care of the customer they don't have to. I am proof they don't automatically side with the buyer 110% of the time.

On topic it seems like a bait and switch as the listing showed something in perfect shape. If the seller were smart he'd just take the return and refund you. If he plays dumb you'll still get a refund as you have pics to back you up. I think people are chiming in because all of us here have probably gotten something less than desirable at times & we're rooting for you because this is wrong. Hope it works out ok.

I think it is crazy to consider any pop box mint personally. Unless it is graded they are very flimsy and if you atre long enough just about every box has a flaw or 2. I would never say I have a mint box to sell.

Now in this case, it def was a different box he sent you from the picture. The seller probably had a few to sell and used the same picture. Then you bought their last one and it happened to be the creased up one.

Yeap, it is indeed terrible if it is a bait and switch. If the creases doesn't bother you so much, push for a greater partial refund. Otherwise a full refund would be most fitting.
