DC - The Next Step

Postby Greeryboy2410 » Mon Mar 16, 2015 7:32 pm

Hey guys,

I was recently thinking about DC Pops, and the lack of different characters. For example, for each of the rainbow batmen, we could've had a different character we all want, like Lex Luthor (he might be 6", but not the point). Now, you could argue that we just got Poison Ivy and Killer Croc, who we've never had before. This is true, but to be honest, I would much rather have new characters entirely, instead of a new series based on a game that included 2 Batmen, another Joker and another Harley(albeit I like the games xD). Not to be contradictory, but one character that I would love to see is the Jay Garrick Flash. We have had Flashes before, but he is very different to the Flashes we already have, which are all just the same sculpt. This does seem to be a rather large rant at the state of the DC line, which is not my angle. My point is, we need a more varied range of characters, rather than a more varied range of character variants. What do you think? Let me know!

I think individual license acquisition, restrictions, negotiations play a lot of a bigger role in this kind of decision making than we like to admit.

could not agree more. this year alone i count about 30 marvel pops i want to buy and maybe 5 from dc. my marvel and dc collection ratio is severely lopsided. dc has got to get it together or else pops will just be another thing marvel will beat dc at.

Just going to copy and paste my post from the "What's with the lack of DC pops? " thread

I completely agree. It's not like they've lost the licences, its just that they are CHOOSING to only give us repaints and variants and different mold of the same 5 characters over and over again with only a few new ones thrown in every so often.

I went through the Pop Checklist and counted how many different variations of certain characters there really were. This is only counting pops that have their own individually numbered boxes, so I'm not even including things like the New 52 variants or any other repaints that share the same numbers on the boxes.

Of the 69 listed on the checklist, there are 9 Batman, 5 Superman, 6 variations of Flash/Reverse Flash, 4 Harley Quinns, 5 Jokers. So for 69 Pops in the Series, 42% of them are various versions of the same 5 characters.

I would LOVE to get some new, fresh characters thrown into the series:

Zatanna, Power Girl, Carol Ferris, Blue Beetle, Booster Gold, Constantine, Simon Baz, Kyle Raynor, Guy Gardner, John Stewart, 6" Kilowog, Elongated Man, Plastic Man, Indigo-1, Larfleeze, Atrocitus, Bleeze, Dex-Starr, Damian Wayne, Talia, Ra's Al-Ghoul, Red Hood, Red Robin, Cassandra Cain, OMAC, Batwoman, Manchester Black, Doomsday, Kalibak, Black Manta, Mera, Orm, Deadshot, Saint Walker, Lex Luthor, an actual Yellow Sinestro, 6" Arkillo, Huntress, Arsenol, Connor Hawk, Hawkgirl, Hush, Fatality, Katana, Oracle, Super Girl, Grifter, Gorilla Grodd, Stormwatch, Voodoo, Miss Martian, Artemis, Cheetah, Terra, Tomar-re, Ch'p, Green Loontern (if they can do Howard the Duck for Marvel, they can do Green Loontern for DC), Big Barda, The Atom, Isis, Hawk and Dove, Mr Miracle, Fire, Ice, the Blackhawks, Vixen, Stargirl, Donna Troy, Wonder Girl, Blackfire, Arisia, the Metal Men, Jade, Alan Scott, Obsidian, Stephanie Brown, Dr Light (both), Firestorm, Kid Flash, Jessie Quick, Plastique, Animal Man, Swamp Thing, Killer Frost

Just to name a few.

Just some ideas. We don't need ALL of them, just trying to get across the point that there are so many characters to choose from, and we're not really getting a lot of variety.

Totally frustrated with the lack of DC POP!s. I like Marvel and all, but I'm a DC guy through and through, and I have a lot more Marvel POP!s than DC.

I am not really a big fan of DC comics, but I feel bad for you guys. I think it is just cheaper to use that Batman/Flash mold over and over and over and over and over again instead of coming up with new ones...especially because you guys just keep buying them hahahaha. But they keep on making so many different marvel sculpts. Seriously, that hulkbuster...why can't that be lex luthor in an exo suit? Why can't they just make a regular lex luthor? Seems like it would just be a cheap paintjob on a generic male body.

I think it is legal stuff. DC is a pain in the butt. I always love to talk about my Bat-Pumpkin obsession (especially when making fun of all the bat variants). and that whole thing came about because they got all uptight about twisted toyfare theatre making fun of some DC characters. I mean, TTT had a whole skit about Doctor Strange astrally projecting and his body being sold as a real doll at Doctor Doom's garage sale, and Marvel didn't even bat an eye.

I don't know where I was going with this...

I'd be curious to know if the upcoming Convergence event has anything to do with the delay in DC pops. They might be waiting until the new universe and characters are selling. I'd love to see an update showcasing more characters from the DC universe as well. I'm sure we'll also see more DC pops being released as more DC movies and television shows start airing.

Baby Groot should have its own count

thanks for the tally, quite the disparity

could you now total the number of active comic titles by Marvel and DC to see if the disparity in POPs is proportional to the number of titles

Correction. They were in target and the chase pieces are rare highly sought after pieces which always leads me to believe there are pallets of the target bobble head pops somewhere in a target distribution center that have never seen the light of day and that is where all the chase pieces are that everyone wants :) I have yet to see another dc bobble at target since I picked up mine on clearance ages ago.

Keep in mind, a majority of the Marvel Pops comes from the movie universe. The more movies, the more Pops.

Now, if you just singled out the characters that were taken directly from the comics, the numbers would be a lot more even.

I said it was 5 including the show ones? The others I totally forgot about, like Captain Cold and Canary, but it still gets the poimt across
And Daredevil was a typo xD

I'm about halfway through the Smallville TV series and I would love a Lex Luthor pop. Other wants would be yellow Sinestro, 6" Doomsday and I hold out hope for a Clark Kent ripping open his shirt, showing off his Superman costume
James, of House Campbell.

from discussions i've had with people who started collecting right from the start, part the reason Batgirl, Riddler, Two face, Penguin, Green Arrow, Aquaman etc etc were retired was because they didn't really sell that well, and only started to become desirable once it was know that they were retired. so my guess is that they have gone with characters that sell, Batman, Superman, flash, joker, Harley quinn.

a large number of the Marvel Pops are also directly tied to their movies, so if you take out of the list the ones that are only based on thier movie character, it isn't as lop sided. Once DC starts their movie roll out, the DC characters should start to even out, and they will probably do more comic book based releases, like they did with the x-men ones.

that said though, i agree with doing different characters rather than different variations on the same characters over and over.
