Box or unbox, that is the question...
So being new to the Pop collection scene, I am struggling with whether or not to unbox my Pops. I would like to display them but obviously they lose a large amount of trade/sale value once they leave their box. Thoughts?

If you are really concerned with resale value, you probably want to keep them in the box. If you just like them and want to display them, free them from their boxes
Personally, I have my commons displayed unboxed, with the box behind them, and the exclusives and harder to find ones are in their boxes. It's a nice mix. It took me forever to decide how I wanted to display mine, you might just have to play around with them and figure out what you think looks good.

I personally like them out of box as you can see all the details. In my opinion, inbox looks a little like a store display. If you are worried about future value just carefully open the box and store it away somewhere so if you want to sell or trade you still have the box. When I first started out collecting I was only interested in about 20 pops max but Funko kept releasing more and more that I like and now I have over 100. I was going to keep them inbox but when I started I found myself stressing over dings and damage. I like to order online and with the not so gentle hands of USPS or store employees most of the boxes arrived less than perfect so now I just recycle them. It makes it easier not stressing about the smallest ding on the flimsy cardboard box. I thought to myself are you collecting the figures or the boxes and I''d rather not collect boxes.
All that said that is just my opinion and I have nothing against inbox collectors.

A little bit of A. And a little bit of B.
Was strictly OOB but I'm playing around with Inbox displaying as well. I can see the arguments for both cases now.

You can just keep the boxes. They're not sealed.

Thanks, everyone, it's just nice to get perspective being so new to the scene. Kanehg, I really like those low profile black shelves for displaying, where did you get them? Expensive?

Theyre IKEA picture shelves. The kind I use are the Virserum type. The other you can see online are Ribba. I only bought Virserum because they were on sale at the store. If you do buy I recommend turning upside down so that the lip doesn't cover your pops feet and you have the option to stack inbox pops too. Can't take credit for that idea

I display everything ! I mean if you are into it for solely for the resale of an item, are you really into it?
Just my opinion of course.

We have most of our collection still in box, but had to open a few that needed to be free.

I'm out of the box myself, but I keep the boxes for exclusives and hard to find ones. Plus, I use the boxes as risers for so I can display more per shelf, maximizes space.

Funko Pop boxes are considered collector friendly boxes. They don't lower in value upon opening unless it is damaged, same goes with Hot Toys or any collector friendly boxed figure!

Honestly I don't see any drop in resale value even if I open the box and display the pop. As long as the paint job is fine and the box condition is alright. The value of the Pop should remain relatively the same.

No, they don't. They are not sealed, unless some idiot at Barnes and Noble put packing tape all over a common Pop.

The only one that I have seen sealed in some way so far has been Smaug and it's just a small strip of tape to hold the top and bottom flap in place. I think his weight is the reason tho

This may not be an unpopular observation, but I've noticed that people that keep their Pops in the box tend to sell off their entire collection and get out of collecting faster than OOB collectors.

The 6" and rides have tape at either end, probably due to box structural integrity. Ditto on heavy POPs like the NFL ones.

I display mine all out of box. Then I started to stress about it and thought I should put them all back in box. But it just got annoying then because you end up with a bunch of damaged boxes and then that's no fun. I'm not going to sell so who cares. Don't stress about the box and just have fun with them.

OOB is way less stressful. Giving up on box quality when purchasing these is such a relief.

I'm an out of box guy. I'm collecting these figures for my enjoyment. Not into it to try and make money off resale. If I was going to trade it would have to be a duplicate I picked up.

The more I think about the box/unbox debate, the more I'm reminded of the Beanie Baby craze and the need to keep those tags pristine. And look at Beanie Baby values today. The majority are worthless.
I'm an opener. I only collect things because I like them, not because I'm concerned with resale. Toys aren't really a sound money-making investment.

This is all great insight, guys, thanks. And to be clear, I am DEFINITELY in this for the enjoyment, not the resale. And truth be told I'm more of a Walking Dead and Game of Thrones fan, and Funko just had the nicest figures on the market to display that passion. Now that I've gotten into it, I can see expanding my horizons to other Funko genres as well though. While my collection is still relatively small I like the look of the Pop outside, standing in front of its box.

They lose sale and trade value if you destroy the box taking the Pop out. There are videos out there on how to open you Pop without damaging the precious box (That someone had the time and inclination to make such a video takes 'pathetic' to a whole new level).
Display them however you like. They're yours.

Re: Box or unbox, that is the question...
I've been collecting for two years now. I kept them in the box for half of that time. I keep them out of the box now and I don't even look back. So much more enjoyable to have them out and see the full model. I tend to keep the boxes nearby or stored safely if I ever need them, as I have turned around and sold a few from the collection once I finally decided what it was I wanted to collect. Dusting can be a pain...

If you got your box in not that great condition in the first place, the resale value has already dropped a little. Take my New 52 Flash box for example. I got it off of Amazon back in August (it was my first Pop
) and the box wasn't great. I didn't return it because I never cared for boxes back when I began. Now it annoys me a little that one corner is ripped, but what can you do?

A line must be drawn somewhere... I had a hard enough time finding one of some of my collection. My wife would kill me if I committed to two of each.

Another weird one that follows this trend is Monopoly. My Dad has two Star Wars Monopoly sets, one for playing and one for selling at a later date
