Question about pricing Prototype Pony vinyls (MLP) ?

Postby Galacticat » Wed Dec 03, 2014 2:23 pm

I hope it's okay to ask for help with price checks here!

I had collected a bunch of the My Little Pony prototypes (white and colored) from Gemini Collectibles, and then got at least one more (Rainbow Dash) from ebay, but now I am running out of room for Funko ponies, and having to pack up all my toys for a renovation in our house which is motivating me to possibly sell some of them.

Any opinions regarding price? Since there are only 2 white prototypes and 5 colored made of any given pony, are the white worth more? My guess would be Derpy, Fluttershy and Octavia would be most popular- but not sure.

I have both the White and Colored versions of:
Rainbow Dash, Dr. Whooves, Fluttershy

I have the white versions only of:
DJ Pon, Lyra, Octavia, Pinkie Pie, Sweetie Drops, Derpy

Here are some old outdated photos- I will try to take some better newer ones- but it will give you something to look at. (It appears I haven't got photos of Octavia, the Dash ponies or Derpy ponies)

In addition to what Carol said...Even though the white ones are considered more rare because they make less of them they are not as popular so they probably won't bring as much money.

Pricing for the pony protos on ebay has been all over the map (as to be expected with ebay). I have seen protos go for as high as 200 or as low as $85. It usually has nothing to do with whether one is white or colored.

As Stacey said, the colored protos are more popular.

Gemini rate is pretty fair.

They do have high rates to start with for protos, so to me it's not a price that you can flip for more money (unless it's a very sought-after Pop! character, like Marvel or Disney sometimes). Like Lara said, I've seen pieces average out around $125 on eBay. Only once did one sell for $150+ and I know who bought that one ;)

Good luck with your move! I'm interested in these so I'll keep in touch!

I think the characters that are less popular might sell for the Gemini price of $150, but I think probably the rest have more value than that considering that Gemini only had all of them for sale for about 5 seconds before all of them were sold out.

I definitely appreciate the thoughts though :)

I don't think you can go by how long it took Gemini to sell them considering they only posted 1 maybe 2 protos of each pony. That doesn't make them worth more money.

Agreed. People stalk Gemini just to buy protos when they go up, regardless of what they are, pony or otherwise.

Lol- yes, I was one of those people stalking! I noticed that the very first time Gemini had ponies up there, they were there a long time before they sold, like a couple of weeks I think. I think I bought one from that first batch.

The second batch was a lot more frenzied! I got a heads up they were being listed, and managed to get about half of them (all I could afford) some other lucky schmo bought the rest up- all very shortly after they were listed.
The third time Gemini had protos up, even though I knew when they were going up, they were already mostly sold out before I managed to get some! There seems to be more people who want the pony ones- not sure if they are Funko collectors or pony collectors.

I didn't even see the Princeses go up, not sure if they ever did.

I've actually had a lot of interest in just a couple of them, and lots of people wanting to pay the gemini price for the rest, which is kind of what I expected.
