How do you collect?
There may be an older thread on this somewhere, if so I apologize. My question is how does everyone collect? Do you buy just what you like ie horror, marvel, TWD, or just try to buy it all. Looking for certain pieces is fun but it's also cool to walk into a store and find ones on the shelf you've never seen even if it's not a favorite character.

Re: How do you collect?
I am a completist with many of the lines (marvel, Disney, Star Wars) and sort of pick and choose from all the others. Once I finished those I have begun buying up all the DC and movie pieces that I like as well as some of the cooler SDCC pieces from the past years.
I do love going out and seeing new pieces in person even if it's not one hat I collect just because I can appreciate the pieces. Not sure how much longer I'm going to be able to go without buying up TWD pieces though as I'm starting to get into that too
Basically mine is an ever growing collection that has roots of completism but has branched out to include at least one piece from every line out there. Sanrio, ugly dolls, game of thrones, halo, games, etc.

Re: How do you collect?
I started by collecting TMNT for the childhood memories and then I kept jumping from my favourite tv shows (Walking Dead, Game of Thrones). As I complete sets, i start looking for exclusives. Ive gone over 100 pops now and im too scared (and poor) to start another series. I did just buy Rorschach (Watchmen) and Benson (Regular Show) out of sheer awesomeness though.

Re: How do you collect?
That's how I feel, I loved TMNT as a kid so I want that set, I love horror movies so I want those, and there are others. I know some just want to have everything but I would rather have a smaller collection of characters I really enjoy than have a massive collection that makes me poor and that I don't have a connection with

Re: How do you collect?
I am a completest for Game of Thrones, Walking Dead, Horror & Stan Lee. I also collect most of the Pop Freddys but don't need to have the 1/12 versions. Other than these lines my collecting is limited to specific pieces that I really like. After about a year of collecting I learned there is simply not enough room to own everything. Focusing on specific lines has made collecting more enjoyable for me...and my display room much less cluttered.

Re: How do you collect?
Started out with some of the first series of Disney, then my wife wanted to complete that one (so we did:P), the others are mostly just buy what we like.
Mostly it's shows (GoT and Walking Dead) and favorite superheroes like Wolverine, Spiderman, etc.
We are definitely not completists, but if there's a series and there's only 1 or 2 that we don't really want yet they would complete the set, we would probably get them anyway.

I am mostly a Game of Thrones completist and do blood splatter for TWD. I love Disney, but I know how difficult that would be for me to grab all of those, so I just pick and choose from my favorite characters. Same goes for other releases. If I think they look awesome, I will usually cave. Hahaha

I want to be a Disney completest, but there's a bunch from movies I've never seen and I have problems staying away from GoT and soon WWE. So I'm going to be a Disney Princess completest, and then pick and choose from there

I'm a completist for Game of Thrones and all X-Men characters then pick and choose from other lines. For Game of Thrones I go for all variants and exclusives, X-Men I buy only one of each character (ex. Zapp comics brown classic wolverine because his costume when I used to read them) instead of all the various forms.
Aside from Game of Thrones I go for links to childhood like X-Men, tmnt, ghostbusters, etc.
Also I only buy single figures no packs or vehicles.

I am a highly specialized completeist, only buying the pieces that people think are going to be retired, rare or very valuable in the future. My super-super rare pieces, like Adventure Time, I have professionally graded so they'll be even more valuable later.
Failing that, I buy every single Pop I see so I have plenty of stuff to sell next month to pay my rent.
I display out of box, so I make sure my boxes are pristine and every sticker is perfectly placed.
I also like to complain about the paint jobs on my Pop's and frequently compare them to other high-end collectibles of the past, like Beanie Babies.

Re: How do you collect?
My wife and I started with Disney and DC. We try to mostly collect what we like but have become select completists. We try to complete the characters we collect, so all of the Robin/Nightwing's for example. Also we try to complete the movies we collect, like all the Pop's from The Incredibles, but we don't necessarily care about other DC or Disney characters. We have all of MLP, Despicable Me, Hobbit, Sci-Fi, amongst others. I'm a big 9" fan and have most of them besides TWD and Mickey (despite being huge Disney fans he doesn't really do it for us). I also like Freddy's but only have a few. And we try to collect some of the Mystery Mini sets, but once again, we want all the versions of characters we like and skip other characters. It's very random but makes sense to us. We've tried at times to narrow down our collecting but have failed, miserably.

Re: How do you collect?
i started out trying to be a completist of everything, but it just became too much, with too many variants that didn't make any sense. i think metallic dumbo was what finally set me off. and that was after i had all the deadpools.
so i've tried to rework my collection a bit.
now i get one version of every number. and i try to get the one that makes the most sense to me. yes, i double up on characters like thor or iron man, because they exist on several numbers. but i skip all those black and white or glows or metallics that are unnecessary to me.
plus, in most cases, the version that makes the most sense is the regular common version, which is only $10 instead of inflated 'exclusive' prices. hooray for saving money!
there are some exceptions, extras that i've kept simply because i like the variation. retro mr. incredible and the blue costume batman, for example.
also, since i display out of the box, i think about my collection in terms of how they wind up looking on the shelf, as a set. like, if you're familiar with the mahna mahna sketch from the muppets, you'd know that it doesn't make a lot of sense to just have one snowth. so i have two, because that looks 'appropriate' on the shelf.
there are only two hiccups to this system. one, i have a ton of stuff to sell that very few people want, because they are all my old numerical repeats -- either commons when i've decided to keep a chase or exclusive, or easy-to-find exclusives that don't make a lot of sense. two, i'll occasionally jump on a figure when it's first released, only to have a better exclusive version released a few months later. that forces me to rebuy the character and get saddled with trying to sell another common that nobody wants.
so... my decorated walls look amazing. but my closet is full of clutter.

I collect the ones I like and/or the main characters from each fictional universe. Example would be the main characters of Star Wars, excluding the droids.

I'm a newbie at this so my collection is very small right now but as I said above I have an interest in certain sets such as TMNT, horror movie, a few other movies such as Christmas Story, Year Without a Santa Claus (if anyone knows where to find a heat miser and snow miser other than eBay let me know haha) I like Hulk but not some other marvel characters so other than the sets I mentioned the rest will just be pick and choose the characters I like more than just buying random pops.

I understand going after the rare exclusives and limited editions but I couldn't justify spending the money to get a Michelangelo, a green metallic one, a grey one, a grey metallic one, etc. but if somebody wants to send me one to start my set I won't complain

Well, I'm really trying to get complete on contest giveaways right now. I find that I love, cherish and make the most money selling the items I get for free! I enter every contest hoping to score some exclusive, exclusive Funko swag. In fact, check my post count. It should equal the number of Funko contests there have been plus 2 (this post and my previous).
If anyone has some stuff they'd like to give away (especially protos, signed figures, and con exclusives) let me know! I'm all about that!

Re: How do you collect?
I collect what I like.
So, my collection is super Random...For instance, I don't have the entire Thor line because I really only care for Thor and Loki, and can do without the extras. I am trying to make a complete collection of all the Iron Man Pop's out there because he's my favorite superhero. I only buy exclusives when I think they look cool.
My collection would probably make most/all of the completists screech.

Re: How do you collect?
I only really collect Game of Thrones, and even then I only get one of each. I personally don't feel a need for any bloody exclusives or the glittery Jon Snow, I'm perfectly happy with the regulars of each. I do have all of the different Tyrions and I'll get the Wedding Dress Dany, just because those are different pieces, plus the wolves and dragons to display next to their owners
. The only exclusive I would get would be Ned, but I'm too poor :P So I guess I'm a "completionist" in the sense that I have every character!
But yeah, other than GoT, I just have Sam and Dean and eventually Castiel. Maybe The Hobbit series eventually, but I'm a college student on a budget!

We collect what we like for the most part.If they put out a set of something we love, we will pick them up. The only set i'm concerned about being a somewhat completest is my Batman collection, but thats going to take some time to gather and thats half the fun!
Because he's the hero Gotham deserves, but not the one it needs right now.So we'll hunt him. Because he can take it. Because he's not our hero. He's a silent guardian.A watchful protector A Dark Knight.

Started with GoT, completed TMNT and He-Man (swore to myself I would stop), then TWD.
Along the way I got lost, and started picking up random figures in lines I otherwise I had no intention of completing, mostly because of the price was low ($5-6).
It really is difficult to stick to a few lines, because Funko acquires so many licenses to movies/shows I love.
Next up; finish Goonies, GoT, and Ghostbusters
I have no intentions of taking it further and buying chase figures/protos...only sticking to basic figures

I am trying to be a completist on Game of Thrones, but I think Hot Topic hates me.
On The Walking Dead I collect the standard issues , not one for the bloody variants on these.
I also collect movie and television Pops! but only as they catch my eye . I'll probably collect any Supernatural ones that come out. And when they start Whedonverse Pops! forget about it.

I'll most likely get the rest of the Planet of the Apes releases eventually and any other release that tickles my fancy. I'm only OCD about the Game of Thrones ones.

I used to be a completionist. I used to have all of the SW line, but sold it recently. The only series/line I am keeping up with is Disney. If I like a certain pop, I will only buy that one instead of the entire series.
Anywho theres my two cents

Re: How do you collect?
I've just been picking and choosing what I like. I already feel like I'm too behind on some lines to be able to afford everything. Plus I have nowhere to put the figures as it is!

Re: How do you collect?
I started with Batman Villains (Got my first when I found Two-Face at a local "Big Lots" store and thought it looked awesome-then realized it is one of the harder to find ones, and naturally that made me want more of them), so I decided that I wanted all the Batman Villains. That turned into Iron Man, then Game of Thrones, TMNT, Batman, Mickey Mouse, Horror (great Halloween decor), Holiday (again, great Christmas decor), and who doesn't love The Beatles!? I also just pick up Pops! that just look cool to me. ...I'm still torn on whether I like them in or out of the box for display. ::End rant::

Re: How do you collect?
I just collect what I like. Some disney, some superheros, some movies. I'm not a completist unless it's a proto set.
My name is Jared!
I'm looking for the color protos for First Appearance Nightwing, TAS Robin, Robin as Batman, and Carrie Kelley

Re: How do you collect?
I collect things from shows and movies that I love or meant something to me growing up. As much as I'd love to be a completionist, I haven't the room or the money so I'm picking and choosing. For instance I love the Pixar line and competed the Nemo movie series because I loved all those pops, but for Despicable Me I only got minion Dave and likely won't get the other characters (maybe the other minion) because he was my favorite and I didn't like the others as much. As long as the Pixar collection as a whole is solid enough to look like a real display, I don't have to have it complete.
I love Disney Pops! but it is just too vast for me to get them all. I pick up my favorites as I go and try to stick to themes like villains, heros/protagonists, etc. so I can put a Dumbo and Beast and Pooh together and it will make sense in a display since they are all hero/protagonists.
I'm doing some DC and Marvel. Superman is my favorite so I'll try to get as many of his variants as I can. The others I will likely only get my favorite one unless I stumble upon a special/rare one.
Anything else that I just really like I'll buy as a solo Pop! And display it with my Misfit Elephant in the misfit toys section, though unlike in thr Rudolph movie, these misfits get lots of love.
Basically I try to group things by theme so it doesn't look haphazard but I can avoid feeling the need to get everything in a series.
