Vaulted vs Retired vs Not being produced

Postby Walker Hunter » Wed Dec 09, 2015 10:54 am

Hello All - Please forgive this thread if it has been asked/answered before. I did a search but could really find the answer I was looking for. If there is a thread, can someone point me to it please?
I was hoping someone could tell me the difference between a POP! figure being:
Retired
Vaulted
Not being produced and longer

If Funko has moved on with their new lines, does that mean that an older figure, say a Walking Dead series 1 Rick, just won't be made anymore? Is that the same as retired?

Peace
"Even my HAPPY place is filled with WALKERS!!!"

Let's just start with the term retired. Brian said he will not use that word anymore. He will use the word vaulted.

When you figure it all out, let the rest of us know. :)

Funko's treatment of 'retired', 'vaulted', 'out of production' has changed as the popularity of Pops has increased.

'Retired' once meant 'never again' right up until they showed up on Popcultcha or other non-US websites.

I think Funko was initially too quick to declare items 'retired' and only did so under pressure from collectors who wanted things labeled 'retired', with the understanding that they'd never again see the light of day. That was a bad decision. Cases of 'retired' Pops started showing up on non-US websites, people were confused, a little angry. It was a mess.

Eventually, Funko switched to 'vaulted', which means no new product until Funko changes their mind, and then you get a new box.

The smart approach is to assume that any figure Funko has the rights to make, will be made in some form if the demand is there. Retired and Vaulted are both garbage terms meaning 'not currently in production'.

Ask about 'exclusives', 'rare', and 'hard to find', next time. That's a fun discussion.

I kind of figured that it might be something like that. It looked like the entire subject was all over the "board", if you pardon the pun.
Were you being funny about the "rare" question? lol
Peace ;-)

I feel like all three dont mean anything nowadays. It its available, get it. You never know if it will come back or not. I dont think anyone knows. Sometimes its re-released, others its rereleased only in other countries, and sometimes there is the "we found a stack somewhere in the warehouse" situation.

Can someone please explain the difference between rare and hard to find? And what constitutes exclusive/stickered/non-stickered/limited numbers? My head hurts. Potato.

I just feel like if they have the license still there is a chance they'll make it again... if they don't we more than likely never see it again... just how I look at things..

That one is actually pretty easy. When you buy Pops they are all common. When you sell them on eBay they are all rare and hard to find lol

=D> lol Best answer!

Since we don't get run sizes on Pops (like we do on Hikari) the difference between 'rare' and 'common' often times comes down to perception or how long ago the Pop was released. The older the Pop is the harder it is to still find it out on the primary market. Of course there are Pops that have been rereleased, which opens a whole other can of worms. Sometimes exclusives are rare, sometimes they are not. To me it all comes down to how many were produced as to how 'rare' an item is, but since most of time that information is not available it's hard to judge rarity. IMHO...

For me, i'll say that vaulted are the one not in production right now but still have the license (like disney or star wars..) and retired are the one with no more license (maybe like the old pop rock line or halo or simpsons..)

I always feel that Funko should re-release pops which are retired with a different sculpt to satisfy both collectors who own them and collectors who don't. E.g. Releasing a New 52 Martian Manhunter instead of the original one. Then again, we all know that not everyone can be satisfied...
