SDCC Dorbz budgets/planning
Anyone else excited and a bit afraid for what SDCC has in store for us Dorbz collectors? I know I'm filled equally with both emotions. Excited to see exclusives (and hopefully Star Wars!!!!!) and also if there will be more Freddy Dorbz released. A bit afraid at the secondary market and it's insane markups for whatever Funko unleashes on us this year. I take care of my mum (cancer) so I cannot attend SDCC. Instead I've been putting away loot here and there building up a nice budget. Any of you been doing same? Mine is currently at $2650. Might seem a bit excessive but if there's like 5 Freddy Dorbz released for example and the only way to get those was at FunDays I'm 100% positive that the going rates for any of them will be in the couple hundred range right off the bat. Toss in any booth exclusives and the general insanity of the reseller market and it can add up. I wanted to extra sure I'll be able to get any Dorbz I want this year and hopefully have a budget leftover for NYCC and so on going into Winter. Curious if anyone else is planning ahead or am I nuts, haha!

Re: SDCC Dorbz budgets/planning
I probably don't have as much of a plan as you do until it gets a little bit closer, but my Dorbz wishlist also probably isn't as expansive as yours. I only really care about Marvel Dorbz so that will make it a little less crazy for me. But I should probably, at the very least, establish a budget and firmly stick to it! I think I'm more excited about the announcement part of it than the actual buying part though. It'll be fun.

I'm planning ahead...to not get my hopes up. I'm not going and know that the prices on ebay will be way more than I'm willing to pay.

Yeah, I'm preparing by reminding myself I don't collect con exclusives. Maybe Popcultcha or Gemini.

I really went deep on SDCC and NYCC purchases last year, there were only a few pieces I didn't want/ get. But man, the super-limited numbers at ECCC this year and correspondingly high secondary market prices really turned me off. The one and only ECCC item I picked up was the Dorbz chrome Batmobile, what I paid for it would have bought 4 or 5 SDCC or NYCC exclusives last year. Ugh. So I'm just hoping the production numbers for SDCC are like last year and not like this year's ECCC!
But yes, very excited about the prospect of SW Dorbz! Here's hoping!

Re: SDCC Dorbz budgets/planning
Thanks Tres! I figured prepare for the worst (eBay) as Gemini has kind of been nightmares past couple years for Pop!s and PC & other online spots always crash or sellout before I can get stuff. My biggest concern is FunDays haha. What if they do a whole line of Freddy Dorbz?!?! Fingers crossed its not total madness like ECCC was.

I miss out on a lot of product because I don't often pay above retail out of principal. If I need to get a Superman figure I will go up up and away but that's it. However I have no plan or budget at the moment, I think I'm going to wait until some things are revealed before I make a list.

I don't have a "budget" so to speak but I'm hoping to buddy up with someone who's going and not a huge fan of dorbz
that way I can hopefully get the pieces I want! It will always be more $$ than planned but it's an absolute blast! I hope there's not a ton of Freddy dorbz eeeeeek!

Re: SDCC Dorbz budgets/planning
The way I rationalize the extra costs (to an extant, haha) is I factor in flight from Hawaii where I live, hotel, convention tickets, FunDays tickets, and of course time in line when considering what I'm willing to pay. A lot of folks get irked at flippers, understandably so for regular store like HT & GameStop who get raided regularly but SDCC and other conventions don't have franchise locations all over the place. That's the only event the exclusives are available (summer convention stickers aside of course). If for example I pay $200 for an SDCC exclusive and that's the only one I wanted, I literally saved thousands of dollars and time by acquiring it online through the secondary market. If I knew anyone that was going I'd love to partner up but I think Funko is going to more strict this year so that route could prove to be more problematic than anything. Plus I'm honestly okay with what I know will be mental prices for the exclusives I want because as shown in my original post I planned ahead for the madness. I do hope it's not SPARTA level madness though. No one wants that.

I'm with everyone else. No hopes of landing the ones I will truly want and not willing to pay the price. I lucked up last year getting one item and I even felt then that it was too much.

If they are the kinds that show up in stores like B&N and Hot Topic, then cool, but if they are online I usually fail at getting what I want regardless of what it is, so I won't have much hope there. Same as last year, haha.

I'll be at SDCC and since I'm single with no kids, I don't really have a budget
I'm just buying whatever speaks to me. This year Mattel and maybe LEGO won't be speaking as loudly to me so I can plan on putting most of my attention and effort towards getting in that Funko line. Sure, there is the option of buying the exclusives after the Con, but I enjoy the thrill of the hunt!

Give us a shout closer to the convention and we'll see what we can do. There are a couple of people in our group who aren't collectors so we could possibly snag you some. I don't think we'll be buying you $2650 worth though

The problem with this is that the non-Funko people will be getting in line for LEGO in the morning everyday. Unless we plan on trying to get into the Funko line multiple days? Assuming you and I can even get in line, we might only be able to get people the stuff that's not on our own Want Lists.
LOL @ Huckleberry. And LOL @ not buying $2650 worth. I don't think my car could fit that much.

Re: SDCC Dorbz budgets/planning
I love how you're putting together your budget. And I am sending prayers to your mom! Keep fighting!!
I think this year will be different in a lot of ways, and it will be very exciting no matter what. Keep up some great relationships here and in the funko community and hopefully you won't have to blow your entire budget on the pieces you really love. I'm not very good at going in with a budget since so often I find surprising unexpected things while roaming the Con floor, and I do look for protos after Fundays as well and who knows what will show up. But that's the fun of it, and keep your chin up and it'll be a great time even for those who can't attend.

I never, ever get anything online when they are fast sales, I'm just not fast enough and have too many other things to worry about. That said, if anything shows up at B&N or Hot Topic, I'll swoop in and see what I can get. I only get very specific Dorbz though, so I'm not stressing over it. Yet.

I agree completely. ECCC Funko exclusives were a major disappointment as the line was capped before we were even let into the hall! I am very interested in getting the Dorbz (but very few Pops), but I have my doubts on whether the Dorbz will even be accessible. If I miraculously end up making it into line, I’ll be happy to pick up some Pops & other products for Funatics.

I think last year, some of the dorbz were limited to 500. But they were still available each day. We were still able to get Groot and Deadpool (both limited to 500) on Sunday. I guess if dorbz are more popular now, who knows how long they will last

If the rumor of the General Mills ad icons are true, those would be the only SDCC Dorbz exclusive I would be interested in getting...hoping that these would be a shared retailer exclusive, but they probably won't be, so I will probably have to go secondary market if I want them.

hopefully we will get to get in the funko line as last year, but it's going to be a struggle as it always gets capped off quickly. we are just excited to be able to attend for a second year in a row and Fundays as well. but definitely will be able to purchase a few exclusives, would love some star wars items
