De-stinking mini hikari

Postby Squird » Sat Aug 12, 2017 10:49 am

I really like the mini-Hikari, but Greedo and the Freddys smell like death out of the box. Outside of boxing them back up, any tips or ideas? I've had Greedo airing out in my basement for over a month.

Never had this issue with any other Hikari.

A lot of unpainted vinyl toys have a strong smell. Other Hikari may not have the smell, because they have random finishes and paint that cover it up.

I have heard multiple people complain about the smell of the freddy hikari's. Maybe it will be like that Seinfeld episode where as much as Jerry tried, he couldn't get his car to smell better.

My recommendation: Tie a "Little Tree" car freshener around Freddy's neck.

I got some sofubi pieces at sdcc that reek of Le' Bud as the french would say :roflmao: and those weren't these pieces that got us stopped at airport security lol. I think the smell just bonds to the plastic because I can't get rid of the smell either.

Mine have been out of the box and "airing out" since I got them. We keep door closed to my toy room when not in there to keep the dogs out of there. Still a noticeable odor whenever I go in there, just kind of stuck in the room. Seems like the smell off the mini Hikari themselves has diminished but now the smell is just trapped in that room.

Doesn't help that I keep adding to the smell collection with all of the various mini Freddy figures lately... :-&

The usual trick for awkward smelly objects is usually a big tub of either baking soda or cat litter.

Basically seal the offending object in a zip lock bag filled with the stuff for a few days, and it should absorb the odour.

Not sure how well this will work for an apparently permanent chemical stench of PVC and mold release agent, but it can't hurt to try this relatively passive method first before drenching your figures in perfumes and other chemically derived sources of additional smell!

I kind of wonder if maybe sticking them in a sealed container with like a box of baking soda or anything would help absorb the smell at all.

For cigarette smell on cards, I use newspaper and baking soda. It seems to work for that purpose pretty well.

I washed them all with dish soap hoping it was a grease issue, No use. Been airing out for a few days, still no use. They may go back in the box for now. I got some company coming in a few days and I think they'd appreciate a cleaner smelling guest/toy room.

Leave one out. I never smelt this smelly smell. And you know how I like to smell things. Put it away after we get there. I must examine with my nose.

My Greedos eventually stopped smelling but I had to put them in another room because it was so strong, it took quite awhile for it to fade

Half of my Freddies have "sofubi smell" - that kind of synthetic plasticy odor - but it's definitely far stronger than any of the standard-sized hikari I own. The other half straight up reek of a kind of pot smell. I'm not sure what the story is on these guys, but left out of the box airing out in a room has improved them a bit. It's still pretty potent though!

My Chopper was pretty awful. He has stayed in the box for now. But two of my (5) Freddys have been airing out, and the smell has diminished significantly. The room they are in has stayed open, but I haven't had to do anything else to help things along.

I set mine out by the window sill with windows open for about 3-4 days now. I think the smell has gone away. I mean if you get up close and sniff it, it's still pretty bad, but as far as actually making the room stink. I think it's done now. I mean I'm used to certain things stinking up a room for a few days like a new memory foam mattress, but we're talking one mini hikari. Forget stink bombs, toss those instead lol.

The mini vader scrappers I bought don't have a distinct odor at all. I don't have any of the others SW minis yet.

But I did notice a lousy smell in my shop recently. Surprise! It's Freddy! Hadn't even opened it. That's a powerful stink. Will see if paint solves the problem.

Vader has been the mildest of the bunch. Greedo is the worst by far, Chopper being a close second and Freddy taking the bronze.

Between the 3 designs I have 19 mini Hikari so far (yikes! those added up quick) and one stinky 12x12 room...
