[Updated for 2017] How to get SDCC/NYCC/ECCC exclusives outside of San Diego!

Postby Trixt » Wed Jun 10, 2015 4:02 pm

Alright, I've seen this question come up hundreds of times within the past few weeks of people wondering how they would be able to get their hands on SDCC exclusives outside of the con this year. With how fast this hobby of ours is growing, many are jumping onto the bandwagon and this is their first experience with the craziness of con season. I decided this would be a good time to make a list of all the known places you are able to obtain SDCC pieces outside of San Diego.

One of the most important things that need to be noted, in the past couple years Funko has gone from having a hard number count on many of their exclusives to them being "limited edition." What that really means is there is A LOT of them made and while they may be hard to find and higher priced in the first few weeks after the con, most will become easier to find and cheaper as time wears on. Stickers that say "limited edition" will be shared exclusives outside of the con in some way. Only those with a hard number will be true SDCC exclusives, and even then may show up at online retailers. Edit: This may not be true anymore as of 2017, waiting to see official boxes but some of those in glam shots that say LE apparently are numbered.

Disclaimer: Many of these sites/stores will sell exclusives with different stickers on the box than those at the con. If that matters to you your most likely chance outside of the con is eBay.

Brick and Mortar Stores:

These places usually have a limit to the number of exclusives you can buy, but how strictly that is enforced seems to vary by location.

1) Barns and Noble: No news as of yet, but have assume they will be participating again. Expect to hear more info on their annual "get pop cultured" event soon.

2) Hot Topic: Again, as far as I know nothing official yet but I would put this at a 99% chance that they will have exclusives. This may be incorrect but it always seems to me that the ones that go to HT are easier to find.

3)Gamestop: I honestly don't remember if they had SDCC last year but there has been "Pop Exclusives (#)" found in their system to be released the same week of SDCC, safe to assume.

4) FYE: Someone correct me if I'm wrong but these guys are rumored to have some this year I believe.

Internet Sites:

1) Gemini Collectibles: By far your best bet. Gemini has been a main stay in Funko collecting for an extremely long time. The entire stock will more than likely be on the site at one time or another. I know I will personally be trying to buy as many exclusives as I can off Gemini even though I will be at the con to save on shipping and suitcase space. Steve has offered a code for SDCC before but that's been a couple years.

2) Fugitive Toys: Fugitive will more than likely have their own SDCC exclusives that are not sold at the booth. They usually do a presale of some kind before the con happens. They get some booth pieces after the con is over.

3) Popcultcha: Everyones favorite Aussie dealer. Shipping may be a little expensive to the US but it is not terrible. Their stock also seems to replenish the weeks after SDCC.

4) Forbidden Planet: UK dealer. I personally have not ordered anything from this website so I do not know much, but I do know they get some exclusives in.

5) Amazon: Amazon will list some SDCC exclusives from smaller retailers that may have good prices on them, will depend on the piece.

6) Toy Wars : Have announced they will be doing pre order on exclusives. If I remember correctly they marked items up before the con last year for pre orders.

7) eBay: This should honestly be a last resort, or used in the months after SDCC once prices have calmed down. Prices will be extremely high during the con as those who missed out on Gemini or the booth will be eager to overspend.

I hope this helps show that their are MANY options outside of making the trek to San Diego. Also that patience is key, do not freak out if what you wanted is sold out on the first day. Many SDCC pieces from last year are still available at a reasonable price today.

Please let me know if I missed any sites/stores. I will not be updating exact stores for this year.

Edit: Apparently NYCC is going to have shared exclusives as well. It seems that all this information still applies.

Edit 2: And now ECCC. Same rules basically apply I'm guessing, Funko should announce the stores and exclusives week of the con.

Thank you very much for the breakdown. I must admit that I'm still on a bitterness hangover from Star Wars Celebration in Anaheim this year. I went on the first day with my daughter and was close to being first in the building (non-VIP) and went straight to the Funko booth line for their exclusives. While waiting in line for close to two hours I watched as a woman in a wheelchair talked her way into the front of the line so she could purchase the Funko Star Wars Celebration exclusives. Not ten minutes later I saw that same woman walking (of her own volition) into one of the "wonderfully reasonable" dealer's booth and slap a $45 price tag on them. About ten minutes later the Funko booth ran out of exclusives. In the end I was able to purchase the pieces I missed on eBay and other sites. All this being said, I totally agree that if you don't get the pieces you want right away, someone, somewhere will have them for sale. Don't give in the to the s-birds trying to jack up the price 500%. Good luck to all.

Just thinking out loud, but do you think with funko not doing a prebuy this year, do you think that some of these online retailers will be affected?

No, eBay resellers and smaller sites will but prebuy never shipped until around a month after the con, these all should have exclusives the week of.

Yes but I do not believe they were sold outside of the con. If so they will Be up on their site after the con.

I'm on mobile I'll add Amazon later.

Just to let you guys know, I emailed toywars about when they are putting up preorders for the SDCC exclusives. They said they won't put them up until the show starts.

I tried Popcultcha last year but they went quick and were not up for pre-order and when they were up a week or so after the event, they went quick.

Great thread, Wil! We all know it was only a matter of time before multiple threads started popping up asking the question. Now, maybe we can only have two or three people ignore this thread and start their own lol

Good luck to all the folks who will be buying pieces online!
