Custom Pop Question

Postby jguerin117 » Mon Feb 20, 2012 4:25 pm

as the pics of my collection show im mainly a statue collector but have really really enjoyed collecting pops. before pops came out i used to collect mighty muggs and there was a large group of collectors who had custom mighty muggs made, does this happen with pops as well. i havent seen any yet.

one of my favorite parts to collecting statues has been commissioning my own statues to be made and having custom paint jobs as well. heres a example of 2 busts i had made and paint(please dont post these pics anywhere else)

and a few that havent got to the painter yet

Re: Custom Pop Question

Postby jguerin117 » Mon Feb 20, 2012 4:32 pm

so the reason i posted these because now that ive tracked down most of the POP's i wanted i really want to get my hands on the DC, Disney and Cereal Monsters POP Protos but i dont think ill be able to get most of the ones i want. so i think i may get a large set of doubles and send them to my painter and let him make me a set of custom POP's.

for example i want him to paint me a set similar to the crazy color protos, paint me a set of DC series 3 metallic POP's and lastly custom make POP's of characters i really like that i dont think will get made like the DC character DR Midnite.

so i was wondering if there is a section that showed other people doing custom pops and if anyone could post pics of there protos so i can get a idea for the colors used.

and lastly i just want to make sure that theres no confusion, these will be just for my collection. i dont sell pieces so i wont be making any customs and selling them as protos. these will just be for my shelves. im still in the market for any pop protos and will pay good money for them.

so again im just curious if theres any pop collectors that have had custom made pops. im interested in hearing any thoughts you guys might have regarding this topic. if i put this in the wrong section, please let me know and were i should put it. thanks again to everyone

From what I've seen, there's not really been any customization pics around here. I know I've got enough extra Green Lanterns now to make all the different versions of Hal, but haven't seen too much talk of others customizing too much.

And having a set of DC series 3 done in metallics is brilliant.

yeah they all look great. having custom pieces and custom paintjobs is one of my favorite parts to the collecting hobby. hopefully my painter will be able to get some done soon so i can post pics. but it could be a little while as im going to a model convention in may and i have about 15 statues i need him to assemble and paint before that convention. hopefully he can do a few pops in between as the statues are drying

I also have a question about customizing. After one pops the heads off the figures for customizing, is there a secret for re-attaching? I am mid-custom and am not there yet, but am beginning to wonder how I'll get the head back on to the body.

What kind of paint would you use on a custom? And do you varnish it once done?

i have no idea i have zero talent when it comes to stuff like this. but the painter i work with does a amazing job on my statues, and im fairly certain these paintjobs will be much easier for him. once i get the details from him about painting them ill post the details here. he also has some very good sculpting work so for characters that i want that need more than just a repaint i can have him do as well. for example if i do a harley quinn he could add all the pieces to her that woild be needed as well as her hammer.

hopefully he will be able to paint these for me inbetween the busts he is painting as i have around 60 busts and statues at his studio in line to be painted, and i dont want to wait for all those to be done before starting on the pops

i used to use a guy for custom mighty muggs and he was very talented he was able to make them look exactly like the mighty mugg style was. but he took a bunch of miney years ago to do some more and than disappeared.

on another topic if anyone here likes to do custom painting, i have a large group of blank white and blank black mighty muggs and would be willing to give them away to anyone wanting them, you would just have to pay shipping costs. pm me if interested

I'm planning on using Citadel paints and a matte finish spray on them. I know several customizers and that's what usually works on other toy lines so I'm trying it first.

Prime first. Paint second.

I use Testor's Acryl paints. They're water based so they clean up easy and they dry fast.

Prime first. Did I say that already?

What ideas do you guys have for symbols? For example, that picture of all the different Lantern suits with Hal Jordan. Whoever made those made some nice looking symbols for the suits. Any ideas?

Oh yeah....that......mmmmmm....I hate Iron Man. Nothing much to see beyond that.

Funkolicious Bob would have a better answer on the Lantern symbols. You can print you own decals on an inkjet printer. I've never done it, but I think he has.
