I've never bought a pop and regretted it.

I've had buyers remorse before but quickly goes away once the Pop arrives...lol.

I would be careful considering these as a great investment. Collecting is crazy fickle. Everyone thought beanie babies were great investments. That didn't turn out so well.

I just collect because of your other points. The nostalgiais awesome with these. If it happens to go up in value that's just a bonus.

jagpop wrote:I'm a relatively new collector. Been collecting since about 2015. It all started for me by buying a few Pops at my local swapmeet (Santa Fe Springs for all you SoCal Funatics). I was not hooked yet. I had maybe 5 in my collection and it was mostly Iron Man Pops. I had just seen 3 IM movies that weekend and I think that's why I bought them. I had no idea what Pops were nor who Funko was. Then my friend tells me about Comikaze and I got my first taste of a bigger selection of Pops. I got Stan Lee superhero and the platinum one. Its been downhill since for my wallet. I can't really pin point to exactly why they are so addicting. It could be an Exclusive, Chase, GITD or just a common, but I really enjoy the heck out of each and every one of my Pops. Plus, this hobby has opened the door to meeting some really cool peeps.

What are some of the reasons you are addicted to Pops?

I remember getting a Spock Pop for my dad for his birthday a couple of years ago, and just though it was a cool inexpensive figure of something my dad enjoyed. The following year I picked up Daenerys as I got into Game of Thrones and Daryl as I got into Walking Dead, and then I got the Joker Batman from Loot Crate. That's all I had until early in 2016. I loved Force Awakens, and then I wanted that FN-2187 pop, and then I started finding all of the different lines, exclusives, convention pieces, chases, and I have been hooked since. :freddy2:

I told myself i would only get pops that i like for example: Ren and Stimpy or Overwatch. But seeing as they literally have a pop for everything i cant help but find myself indulge in the search for more pops! never had a chase been looking at a Chase set of Ren and Stimpy but they are about $80

Man it's the thrill of the hunt! Chasing for your own personal grails is what makes it exciting, then when you finally get what you've been looking for, you set your sights toward the next grail! Chasing them down is what gets you addicted!

All but the investment part are good points. Be very careful calling them an investment. All trends have their ups and downs, history proves that toys/comics/etc make for pretty poor investments in the long run.

It is a crazy addictive hobby if one is not careful but's also a fun one with a lot of good people on board, just spend some time on this forum and you will see that.

Agreed. Licensing is a major player in keeping Pops relevant in the collectibles industry. This is part of what sets them apart from the often compared Beanie Babies.

I chose this topic as my first board post because for me this is a true addiction. I prefer in store buying but most of my locals have poor inventory and we also have a large reseller community. This requires lots of driving around and tons of disappointing stops BUT when you find something, it's all worth it. Mostly a in box collector, I am pretty picky when it comes to condition. All of my pops are in protectors. Started really collecting POP!s about 8 months ago and Im currently at about 150. I collect what I like. I won't give in to resellers either. Like all things collectible you will have flippers. If you don't give in to them, you will eventually free the strangle they have on collectors. So that's my introduction to you. HELLO! My name is Ryan.
The only way a reseller eats is when you feed them. =;

I am with you. I have yet to give resellers that are pure flippers money. I have resold some of mine, but I always sell at value even if that means a loss in money.

I started collecting a few years ago now, and I definitely got hooked very quickly. It started when my boyfriend bought one. I had never heard of them before but I thought it was cute, so I looked it up online and was amazed to see how many different ones there were. It seemed like almost any character I could think of, there for a pop for it!
That was the start of many fun days of pop hunting. It was definitely the thrill of the hunt that made it so addicting. We would spend hours walking around the city exploring different stores looking for the ones we wanted. It was really exciting finding ones we had never seen before, and thrilling when we would find the ones were looking for. Also anything that looked cool or cute, I'd buy it.
Once I'd pretty much bought all the ones I wanted, shopping in physical stores was no longer exciting because I'd pretty much seen it all before, so I began to look online for older retired/or exclusives. So that brought back the fun because now I had access to "grails" and other cool pops that weren't just readily available in stores. However I didn't do this too much because some were just too expensive and I hate giving into flippers!
Now that there's no "thrill of the hunt" anymore for me, I can't say I'm addicted anymore. I still go out and buy new releases that I like, but it's not the same as going out and spending the day hunting for new ones! Still, pops have given me many great memories and time with my partner collecting, so I'll always love my collection for that! :)

Well put. I share the same sentiment, ultimately buyers is what creates a flipper.

Welcome to the boards also.

I'm a sales guy and Funko is one of my customers. I had always been into comics and superhero stuff but I had never bought anything Funko. The first time I visited their headquarters they took me through the store and let me fill a box full of Pops for free. That has to be the best investment they ever made because I've been addicted ever since! I recently added my hundredth Pop to my collection (Blue Stealth Iron Man) and I have over 20 Dorbz. I'm a subscriber to Legion of Collecttors and Marvel Collector Corps. I am living proof you can be addicted to Funko!

Newbie here also, this topic hits home because I just started collecting. It started with family getting me a Daryl Chopper pop ride for my birthday then Christmas my buddy I work with who is a big collector, and I used to make fun of for collecting "dolls" got me a Dom Charger ride. I bought a Deadpool Pop because I'm a Deadpool fan and now a month and 32 Pops later Friends and family tell me I have a problem and may need an interdiction soon. No kidding, I have not been to a mall since 2001 and never been inside a Hot Topic, now my friend and I go on our lunch hour once a week to hit Hot Topic, Box Lunch, FYE, B&N, Gamestop, and now I'm a frequent visitor to the toy section at Walmart also. Its all fun though, keeps me entertained. Now its time to put up new shelves in my living room so they are not all stacked up on my kitchen table, OH yea and waiting for the last couple Spider-Man Homecoming ones I need to complete my first collection!

I collect pops because somehow they feel ornamental. Their designs are simple but unique enough to realize the character, they're incredibly consistent which is what I love as a collector, but going back to the thought about them being ornamental, I feel as though pops can stand as a representation of your favorite memories, interests, passions, characters or times of your life. They're well made and easy to display. What's not to like about them?

There's lots of reasons I find it addictive - which also means that I have to really be careful:
- With all of the licenses, there's always something new that I relate to
- with the sub categorizations, collecting subsets makes collecting accessible and possible to 'finish' a subset
- the relatively low cost of the pops also makes it accessible - I find myself impulse buying just because I think one looks cool

My fiancee and I got really into it based off of nostalgia, we would see lines of TV shows and movies we loved. From there we started picking up almost everything we thought looked cool or brought back memories of anything fun from the past.

Pft... They're not addicting at all. I can totally quite anytime I want to.

*stops... looks around the room at the six new Rock Candy figures, pile of Dorbz, box of Mystery Minis, and bowl full of Pint Size Heroes cluttering his room right now*

...I may, however, have a bit of a problem with certain other Funko lines. Curse you Funko, for making awesome and (mostly) affordable colorful pieces of plastic that appeal to me. Curse you all to Hades.

Hmm so far so good.
I mean I've got tons of pops I paid retail for that are now worth $200+ each.
And none have ever dropped below retail.

I have only been collecting for about a year, and find myself reaching into my wallet to purchase a Pop more than normal lately. I try to be somewhat selective on the Pops I purchase and have to limit myself because if I don't I would go broke and get hell from my wife. Ive asked myself why I collect, and truth be told it comes down to a few reasons. Pops are cute looking, and depending on the theme they can take me back to a specific time in my life. Example would be the recent WB and Hana Barbera Scoobys etc which reminds me of all the Saturdays I would have in front of the TV in the mornings. I used to love waking up early in the morning to catch my favorite cartoons. The other reason is that now I can also afford to buy what I want unlike when I was a kid and had to beg mom to buy something for me. Plus I love that my kids are into this also which gives us more reasons to bond.

I think if people are collecting as a investment, they might be in for some disappointment down the road. I invest in many things, stocks, bonds, et, but when it comes to things like Pops or comics, toys. These are items you collect for fun and because you love and enjoy them. If they turn out to be something of good monetary value in the future...well that's awesome. Pops are awesome and I know that many of them have some good $$$ value, but I would consider this type of investment high risk because at the end of the day Pops are only worth what someone else is willing to pay for it. I think purchase for the love of it, not for the monetary gains, and if one day they do add great value then you got lucky.

Agree with this 100%. I buy all my Pops because I want them, not for any hope to eventually resell. I'm too attached to them to ever sell them. lol

Once you pop, you can't stop. I've been collecting since April 2016 and have nearly 900. I really need to trim down the collection and focus on the things I really like but there are so much cool stuff in other things that I don't necessarily need lol
