You've got a great start to your collection :-) If you don't mind some advice on the risers, it looks like you're having trouble getting a nice, straight cut, is that right? I use a metal straight edge for shorter cuts and an aluminum T square for longer cuts, it looks like this one:

http://drywall101.com/images/content/fullsize/t-square.png

I use just a regular Exacto handle and number 11 blades, looks like this:

Image

A single blade will get you through many cuts, you can tell when it starts getting dull as it will no longer cut cleanly but will start tearing the paper or foam core. That's when it's time to swap blades. Some people use box cutters but the thicker blade makes it tough to get a clean cut.

A "self-healing" cutting mat is an absolute must, they look like this:

https://www.thevillagehaberdashery.co.uk/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/o/l/olfa_cutting_mat.jpg

It will protect whatever surface you're cutting on, plus it keeps your piece from slipping while you're cutting. You can also use the lines on it as alignment assistance to make sure you're cutting straight. Plus because it is a soft surface you're cutting into your blades will stay sharper longer.

Anyway I first measure and make a couple of light marks with pencil and then I line up my straight edge on the marks. I'm left handed, so I apply downward pressure to the straight edge with my right hand and cut with my left. I do not try to cut all the way through on the first pass because there's a higher chance of the blade "walking" if you do that. Instead, apply medium pressure and cut from one end to the other in a smooth, continuous motion. Try to apply a slight amount of pressure into the straight edge to keep the cut from straying away from the straight edge. Make two or 3 more passes until you've cut all the way through to the other side.

It takes some practice but after a while you'll find you can make the cuts smooth every time and can also do it pretty quickly.

I hope that helps!

I emphasize to use an X-Acto knife and changing blades after each sheet. Makes life more easier. Kimchi also said to dedicate 1 sheet of foam board just for steps. I used 3/4" nails as I couldn't find 5/8" nails.

Nice work Mike, your cases look great! Kimchi has inspired a lot of us to do some really killer displays :-) Especially the LED strip lighting idea, wow that made a huge difference in my cases. Kimchi mentioned in an earlier post that over time some of the risers have started sagging from the weight of the Pops. When I build my risers I use solid verticals as well as horizontals. I also use hot glue (sparingly) to assemble mine although you have to be careful as it can get messy fast. The verticals and the hot glue really result in rock-solid risers though.

Yeah I used a box cutter I had from work and was pretty difficult getting a good cut, thanks for all the advice though. I'll for sure take it all into consideration my next time around.

From Ikea, they are called Detolf Glass Cabinet. It was $59.98 I think for one.

It always starts out with adjusting one thing out of place and then turns into a field day. A local Funatic and I were just talking about that this morning! LOL! :)

Really like these, especially with the risers, I just don't have a single place to put one, let alone two or three in my apartment. For now my display is on the wall, but I'll be out of space by spring, if not sooner, ugh.

Good golly miss molly!! 1,000 Pops? Yikes!!! I'll need a house and a large man cave and more money if I ever want that many Pops and still stay married, but that's awesome and insane! Still bugs me to see so many in boxes though...haha. Looks like a store instead of a collection, but I am still in awe! Amazing!! :D

Decided to try out some shelving to make room in the cabinets for my Disney collection. Old, slightly uneven plaster walls made this quite the experience, but I got them mostly straight. lol I have 5 more to hang tomorrow, but for now, here's part of my relocated collection. :D
