People keep wanting SDCC to have a lotto like NYCC; drives me nuts because I don't think lottos work. I like forced decisions as people tend to not just sign up. You can see it in the parties at other cons where people just sign up; get into something they really wanted and just don't show leaving valuable spots empty that other people would have gladly filled. I hope ECCC works better than those other lotteries but I'm not sure how it will.

I agree with this for SDCC outside the Preview Night Lottery. You will definitely have people who are on the fence signing up just because its convenient.

maybe they should move to 50/50 lottery and camping; I don't know.

Lol 20 of us went to NYCC this year and only 1 person won a spot (for a 3pm session no less). Definitely some flaw in their system this year I think. I see some people going multiple times which was odd.

It is worth noting that the system belongs to Reed the organizers of eccc and nycc not Funko. Reed had some missteps but they are learning and trying their best o make adjustments.

I also want to mention that my company exhibits at nycc and eccc. We used their lotto system for a giveaway at nycc and we had a limit of 500 lotto spots over the 4 days. We had over 4000 entries. And our exclusive was no where near as popular as Funko. We had a lot of disappointed fans. We also experienced some people who got double spots but Reed worked really hard to go over the entries and make sure it was fair and only one per person after the error was caught.

It wasn't perfect but they are learning and Reed controls the results. Funko or the exhibitors who are using the lotto system.

Lara

4k entries for 500 spots is exactly why I don't like the idea of mass lotteries. It'll only fuel the resell market.

I agree with this for SDCC outside the Preview Night Lottery. You will definitely have people who are on the fence signing up just because its convenient.

The first problem with camping (50% or otherwise) is that it just fuels people getting there earlier and earlier to line up. Nobody wants people sleeping overnight on the floor, especially not the people who own the property. I'm in a few collecting circles and one of them got so bad that people camped out for five days for an LE 300 item, and some of them would bring children with them. They now do lotteries and it's safer for everyone, and everyone who goes knows they have a chance at winning and a chance at losing. You win some, you lose some. I find lotteries to be much fairer and safer in general.

The second problem with camping at a comic con is that just because you're the first in line to get into the show floor doesn't mean you're the first in line at the booth. I have been to quite a few cons and went straight to funko, many of which I was nearly first in line for the show floor and was 300 back within the 25 seconds it took me to get to the booth. At least with the lottery I have a semblance of a chance.

I'm getting away with only having one Pop to get for ECCC, Padmé, which is a giant must-have for me. There was nothing interesting to me that was revealed since my last post.

I don't think you really have a semblance; it just encourages groups of people who aren't collectors to enter "just because". I don't like lotteries; and I don't think they encourage items getting into the hands of true collectors. Just my two cents; not like I have a choice in the process.

This should be it's own thread. Interesting discussion that needs an answer.

Personally, the camping thing is out of control. Line jumpers, people holding spots for 100 people, lining up 5 days before. Lines are resellers dreams. I find lotteries to at least be conceptually fairer even with the non collectors entering. Out of everything I've seen, sdcc's waiting room and a limited number lottery at a given time seem to work the best. Probably get flamed for the sdcc mention but honestly, even though there are some bad feelings, I always feel like it was pretty fair.

Yeah... This is supposed to be about the POPs coming for ECCC, this should probably be discussed in the "Con-versations" thread for ECCC or maybe even it's own thread.
