How would you think about a musical theatre line?

Postby Infinity » Mon Dec 18, 2017 9:47 pm

Hello ! I was thinking that since we have Pops based on musical movies (lalaland) it could be really amazing to have Pops about (non/)Broadway shows ! Do you think it could happen someday? It would be complicated of course to determine what a character looks like, if they have to make him after the original actor or not, but maybe they could just make them for conventions so they would not loose money.
I'd love to see Pops about The Book of Mormon, Wicked, Les Misérables, The secret garden, Spring Awakening, The Phantom of the opera, waitress, Dear Evan Hansen, Hamilton, Heathers, Be More Chill, Rent, Hairspray etc etc etc.
Do you know if it would be more complicated to have the rights than for a movie or something ?

I was thinking the same thing recently - I love musical theatre and I’m completely obssessed with Hamilton, Something Rotten, Falsettos, Book of Mormon, Waitress, Legally Blonde, School of Rock and In the Heights above other musicals at the moment. I actually found a few people selling them on Etsy (although they’re pretty expensive at about £50-£150) based on obc or owec characters or customised to certain actors for extra. They have characters such as George Washington, Alexander Hamilton and Marquis De Lafayette (Hamilton) Elphaba Thropp and Glinda/Galinda Upland (Wicked) Dawn Williams and Jenna Hunterson (Waitress) Nigel Bottom, Portia and William Shakespeare (Something Rotten) and many other characters. If you just search ‘Broadway funko pop’ on Etsy there are many people selling them

This crossed my mind the other day too when I was rewatching Rent. I’m sure Funko is just wary as to how well they’d sell, but I’d imagine the market would be pretty good for something like Hamilton, maybe even Rent or Wicked. It would be perfect to sell them at the merch stands at the Broadway show/tour for audience members because the show is freshest in their mind. I think if some of the Pop Rocks can sell, they can definitely release some Broadway Pops!

I would love to see Broadway pops, especially the Book of Mormon. I feel like one of the only sets I could see being produced out of the list is Hairspray because there was a movie to go along with it. Classic broadway shows like the Phantom of the Opera don’t have a distinct actor to base the pop off because it changes throughout the years. That’s why I think they shy away from Broadway musical pops. If they were to be made, it would have to be based on the 2004 movie. However, we do have the classic The Lion King pops which is a huge success on Broadway and for Wicked we have the classic Wizard of Oz pops as well! As long as it has a movie re-enactment I feel like it’s definitely a possibility in the future.

I would be down for this - I wonder why Funko hasn't reached out. I wonder if Broadway is way more stingy with their licensing. Although Andrew Lloyd Webber is a nutter, so idk if he would be for or against this LOL But I'm sure a handful of Broadway people would be down for it. I know someone who makes Hamilton customs and they look great.

You're right about Hairspray, and it would be more complicated especially with the licence. But even if the Phantom changes it is still a character we can easily recognize thanks to his mask and suit. Let's hope for more movie then ! ^^

I think someone asked about Hamilton pops before in one of their Q&A’s and their answer was to ask Lin Manuel Miranda, so I’m wondering if its a licensing issue.

That's what I was wondering. I guess that they could use the original Broadway cast but that won't be a problem for some musicals because a Phantom doesn't change, Cosette will still be a blond little girl, Elphaba will always be green and in the same clothes. We wouldn't always need to base a Pop on the actor but on how the character is the most represented maybe.

I think it's a really great idea especially since so many Broadway shows have such iconic costumes that it really doesn't matter who is playing it the costume is super identifiable. I would like some movie musical Pops as well. Gene Kelly from Singin in the Rain and a Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers combo dancing together especially.

True. At the end an actor adopts a character's style so they all look the same at the end.
That would be sooo great ! I'd love Gene Kelly in a big box to recreate the well known moment, a kind of movie moment where he's alone ^^ Fred Astaire is a very good idea !

Fun idea - I’d love Wiz pops and Fosse-based pops (Chicago, Cabaret, Sweet Charity). Also love the idea of Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire movie moments.
