POP Quality Control / Poor Paint Apps on first figures?

Postby Tigger » Fri Jun 20, 2014 3:28 am

So I just got my first two POP figures today - Harley and Sam. I must say I'm a tad disappointed with the quality of them. Overall they're not bad but both have more than a few paint flaws. Sam has some scratches on his face, small chunks of excess vinyl on his hair, and several paint flaws which are pictured. Harley fared a lot better but still one pigtail that's very loose and a couple paint flaws such as her cleavage area and spots on her hat/hair. Now since these are my first two, I'm not sure if this is something common with POPs and I'm just being super picky but I was honestly expecting a bit better.

Welcome to the world of Pops, it's a kinda common problem, it's best to buy them in person so you can check the paint jobs before you buy

Is it only me that doesn't mind the flaws? I think it makes them more unique.

Those actually look pretty ok to me. The only ones that really bother me are the ones with over sprayed eyes.

Remember, these are $9 toys/collectibles that are mass produced in China, you are buying, not $300 sideshow statues.

This. Bryan told us that if we wanted better products the prices for said products would raise substantially.

I don't mind the minor flaws. When I bought my Grey Wind, I was told he had some minor paint defects. I got him for $20 because of it, and when I got him, he was near perfect. He only has one very tiny white scratch in his gray fur. I do like to buy them in person, but when buying online, it could be a win or lose situation.

I do love these silly little things, though. So, I'm happy with them! Paint flaws and all.

Yeah sometimes their 'paint flaws' aren't that bad.

Got a Gemini exclusive Pop! figure with a 'paint flaw' for half price. The flaw? Had a little extra paint on one eye. Cleaned off extra easy and it was a good price.

Looks look pretty good, not too bad at all. Only flaw that bugs me is hairline and eye over spray

pfft. My Metallic Blue Lantern Flash has a Big gap between his head and the lightning bolt on it sticking from the side. Along with bubbles on his face. Its just how the Pop! game is.

They must have changed manufacturers because the glue, plastic and paint have been different for the WWE and horror pops I've noticed. the horror pops are very clean

I understand this, I was just quite honestly expecting a bit better QC. Harley isn't too bad but Sam has paint issues on every part of the figure. When I used to collect Mighty Muggs I rarely had issues of any kind with paint and those were comparable to POPs. Maybe this Sam was just a case of bad luck but I'm hoping that's just what it is. If the rest are like Harley in terms of quality, I can live with that.

There are 7 different factories that are manufacturing Funko products, including one in Vietnam.

Comparing mighty muggs to pop is unfair, one had zero detail and other (usually) has great detail. Only comparable in price and size maybe.

I Kinda feel like pop killed the mighty muggs main line, and is partly the reason we get bobble head marvel and Star Wars vinyl figures.

It's far easier to screw up a paint job when the entire surface is flat and on the same plane like Mighty Muggs. POPs such as Sam have lower arms that are painted separately and then attached to the rest of the arm which also makes cleaner paint jobs easier to do. So I think it is a completely fair comparison. And I was just thinking of all the 4" figure lines such as Star Wars, Marvel Universe, and GI Joe that have very consistent paint jobs across figures and they are VERY tiny compared to POPs. Plus that have so much more detail and articulation to work around when painting too. I was just a bit let down with the pain job on my Sam POP specifically when thinking like that.
