Your ReAction Questions Answered Here!

Let's talk about Funko and Super 7's great line of ReAction and Legacy action figures. They don't bobble or pop, but they thrill in their own fun way.

Hi Reis. I just got the Warpo Kickstarter figures from their Cthulu line in yesterday and I must say, they are most impressive! I'm also looking forward very much to Bif Bang Pow's KISS and Flash Gordon lines of retro style figures. My question for you is, out of the competition what are you most interested and inspired by? Do ya'll have a sense of rivalry or friendly competition with your fellow toy designers from these other companies? I'm really loving all the attention Kenner styled figures are getting lately and I'm anxious to see what will be brought to the table over the next couple of years! I think it will be great, a little friendly competition to see which figure line raises the bar for the next line.

This is an excellent question! I'm extremely excited about what Bif Bang Pow and Warpo are doing! In all honesty, we don't really view other companies making similar products as "competition" because having them out there doing their versions of vintage style figures just helps us show the world that this is more than just a fad toy line from one company, but rather a full-blown, strong category. Categories tend to have greater market longevity and are healthy for everyone involved.

Also, we're pretty friendly with the gang at Bif Bang Pow, so we're rooting for them on a personal level. They're great people who do great work and deserve all the success they have. You can bet your teeth that I'll be buying the KISS and Flash Gordon figures!

And I just pre-ordered my Warpo Cthulhu figures yesterday! Can't wait!

Malcolm Reynolds needs a bad guy. And Cthulhu is just alien enough to fit the bill. Some reavers would be better, though. hint hint. just saying. don't look at me in that tone of voice.

Will we see any new pictures of the 2015 lines before Toy Fair? Even if its the week before? I'm excited to see new stuff and the wait is agonizing.

Last year, many of the lines debuted on Entertainment Earth just prior to TF. However many were early prototypes and were met with a less than enthusiastic response from some...especially those who weren't connecting with the ReAction aesthetic. I don't know if we'll get something similar this year.

And, since this is a Q&A thread, Reis...could you say if Trek TOS is expect in the first half of the year or the second half?

I'm one of those people who has been on the anti-vintage bandwagon since it started gaining popularity, mostly for fear that (like with Marvel legends when Marvel Universe came out) the 6" scale super articulated super detailed figures that i have been collecting for 10 years would come to a screeching halt. Since then I've kind of softened up to the idea of vintage figures. Largely due to funko's ability to maintain both ReAction and Legacy at the same time. Then Firefly.... I couldn't resist. I was weak and Reis (who i hold personally responsible for my addiction to funko stuff) stabbed me right in the fond memories with 3 different Malcolm Reynolds figures. I'm still planning on being selective with ReAction as opposed to automatically needing to have everything like I do with everything else, but this is the first time i've been excited about vintage styled figures to be revealed. Fifth Element ermahgerd. I think more people have had time to settle into the idea that different sizes and styles of figures can coexist. I'm sure there will still be some resistance but not nearly as much.

Maybe. That's not really my territory. I'm not sure what deals have been worked out with whom on the whole early reveals thing. It's possible that the bossman may want to save everything for Toy Fair.

I've been a collector of "vintage" style 3 3/4" figures since the time where they weren't vintage, they were the new thing that everyone was worrying would put a stop to their preferred collectibles, namely 8'' Megos and 12" GI Joes. Kenner came out with their Star Wars line and everything kind of took off! I think all these things can coexist! The 80's were certainly a fine example of this! On that note, I would love it if Funko would do like Bif Bang Pow, DST/EMCE, Figures Toy Company and now NECA are doing 8" Retro MEGO type figures! Has Funko given any thought to that?

Okay Reis, this has been killing me for a while. Designing ReActions, are they meant to be displayed on the card or off of the card? Unlike most of Funko's other products, once you open them, there's no going back. When designing the figures, were you making them to be displayed still on the card, or just as figures?

Also, not sure if you can comment on this, but do you know anything about the 'protos' of some reaction figures that show up on eBay from China?
My name is Jared!

I'm looking for the color protos for First Appearance Nightwing, TAS Robin, Robin as Batman, and Carrie Kelley

Hi!
I just joined the forums and immediately added to the wish list thread what I hope to see in the ReAction style.
Now could you say if any of these licenses are possible or completely off the table?
Hellboy (comic and or movie)
Ghostbusters (movie or "real" cartoon)...I know these are probably "no"
Classic Scooby-Doo
Muppet Show
Doctor Who (also guessing "no")

Thanks and I'm looking forward to seeing the reveals at toyfair

Whether you display them on the card or off the card is a matter of personal choice. We made the choice to seal them in their bubbles in order to maintain that vintage feel. However, when designing both the figures and the packaging, we've tried to keep both "loose" and "MOC" collectors in mind, so that no matter how you choose to display them, they still look great.

The "protos" coming from China are most likely "test shots", which they use to see if the mold is working correctly with the injected plastic. Technically, they shouldn't be leaving the factories in China, but that's the nature of the biz.

Can't really go into that. Because what's a "no" today could change tomorrow. But I also read the wishlist thread and keep an eye out for recurring licenses.

On a personal note, I'd also love some classic Scooby Doo figures done int he ReAction style!

I have a question regarding licenses. Say a company is already producing action figures for a property, but they are out of scale with the vast majority of other lines that collectors usually enjoy. (neither reaction or legacy scale) Such as doctor who (or more specific to my inquiry "Torchwood") does Funko ever consider acquiring the licenses to the properties in the way that Diamond still produces "Marvel Select" even though hasbro holds the license? Or would producing a different scale or a different level of quality even matter? or is it something specific to each license? I'm not sure how all of that works.

It really depends on the the license and the contract they have with that other toy company. And every license is different.

The Big Trouble in Little China ReAction figures are a must buy. So excited for them. My only concern with them is Jack Burton's head sculpt. For some reason it looks a bit more cartoon-ish and distorted compared to the other BTILC figures. Was just curious if that sculpt was final? Buying them all either way as it make a long time dream come true.

is it just me or do the faces on these look better than the faces on much of the past offerings. almost more character specific, maybe? Any chance this is going to be an ongoing thing?

Nope, they're 5 POA. All ReAction will follow that format for the foreseeable future. But I know what you're thinking, you want to make Kirk sit in his Captain's chair, right? ;)

Honestly, I cannot wait to see it in person. It really is a dream come true to get these guys as figures. Thanks again for all the hard work and taking the time to talk to us.

I think the reaction figures are the coolest thing since jakks did the wwe legends figures,i can't imagine how i would have been able to hold it together as a kid in the 1980s in the toy area of the local Hills department store, and discovering big trouble in little china figures..i would have went nuts, because in my late 30s..I'm going bananas looking at them..I am as excited as I was when I was unwrapping my masters of the universe figures on Christmas morning 1981/82 haha..thanx Reis&company!

Nope, they're 5 POA. All ReAction will follow that format for the foreseeable future. But I know what you're thinking, you want to make Kirk sit in his Captain's chair, right? ;)

And Chekov and Sulu to sit at their console. And Uhura and Spock to sit at their stations. But not Doctor McCoy. Nope, he can stand, because he's a doctor not a lounge-about, dammit. ;)

Alrighty then, Bridge chair with Taun-Taun-esqe trapdoor hinge to hide the legs anyone? lol

How much thought and resourcing goes into the longevity of the figures? So far I have been keeping mine on card, since the card displays so well. But I have noticed that most of my cards are warping if not stored in Star Cases.

Just wondering with the cost of production, do you tend to opt for the most "affordable" resources, or does the long-term display-life of the piece also come into consideration during production?

There doesn't seem to be any rhyme nor reason for bubble-yellowing (which I have not yet seen in ReAction, but arguably the line is too young for this to occur yet), but I'm dead afraid my carded pieces are going to get it. Has already happened with a number of my favourite, older, carded action figures. I'm predominately an opener, but when clever packaging prevails I may opt to keep certain items on card.

First off, thanks for the Big Trouble figures. They're awesome. With so many new licenses on the way have a few questions.

1) Out of the unseen lines, which are your personal favorites?
2) What's the one property you'd now like to see in ReAction form the most?
3) Having looked at the Wishlist thread, are there any suggestions that stood out as ones you'd like to see?
4) Figures from Berry Gordon's The Last Dragon are on the big list right? (The only real answer to this is Sho'Nuff! of course. ;-) )

Hey Reis!

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I was wondering about the UM Brides dress.

Generally the legs are very close together on these kind of figures to make the 'legs' look more like a dress/robe (vintage Leia/Obi-Wan), however on the Bride the legs are quite far apart, making them look more like flared pants.

Was this a production issue or a design choice?

I noticed we have a few more figures like this coming up, such as a Big Trouble in Little China characters. Would their legs be closer together as in the promotional images, or further apart like the Bride?

Thanks!

Yes, the warping cards have been a constant battle for us. We often get samples in that are just fine and stay flat, but then when the production pieces come in we have occasionally notice some warping. I'm constantly reminding the factory of the importance of them staying flat.

Have faith that we are trying to make that better.

As far as yellowing of bubbles is concerned, we don't foresee that becoming a problem. But I guess we'll know in 20 years. ;)

However, to answer your main question, affordability is important, of course, but putting out the best possible product (while maintaining a $9.99 price point) is our main focus.

1) Right now, I'm madly in love with the Jaws figures.
2) Last Starfighter or Conan the Barbarian.
3) Yes, quite a few!
4) Sorry, but no. But I do love that movie!
