Question about SDCC Exclusive Stickers

Postby MisterHeisenberg » Tue Jul 29, 2014 8:40 pm

So I have been seeing on ebay that a lot of the Comic Con exclusive pops have stickers on the box that just say Funko 2014 Convention Exclusive Limited Edition instead of the actual Comic Con sticker. Are these legit? Reason I ask is because I bought a Headless Hershel but didn't pay attention to the sticker until after the fact. My assumption is that it is legit but may not be as valuable as the ones that actually say Comic Con. Or does it matter? May be a silly question but this is actually my first Comic Con exclusive. Please enlighten me. Thanks.

The "exclusives" sold at B&N and Hot Topic have the generic Convention sticker.

I assume the ones bought directly at ComicCon would have the one that actually says San Diego Comic Con on them. (Which would include Gemini & Popcultcha Pops, since they buy them directly from ComicCon & resell)

Its possible the ones with the actual Comic Con sticker could be worth more, but other than that tiny piece of paper the two products are exactly the same.

I saw a handful of people that got the generic convention sticker on toys they got at Comic Con. It's still an "exclusive" but there was also definitely generic stickers om some of the ones physically purchased at Comic Con. Kind of annoying and confusing. Also kind of lame to buy one at the Con and then see the same sticker on one's at B&N and HT.

Kind of annoying but everyone new that going in. These are no longer comic con exclusives at least the majority of them. Most are or will be avaiilable everywhere and are unlimited in number. If people want more they just make more.

I understand with growing popularity "exclusives" will be less exclusive but they could've at least done SDCC stickers for all the ones sold there like they did with the Ned Stark last year. Really its just a sticker but for slightly obsessive collector's its annoying. Haha.

I bought one with the convention exclusive sticker off ebay. I tried to buy one from Gemini, but I was on a phone (I was at SDCC, but was not about to mess with the Funko booth!), and had issues getting through (I suspect it would have been the same on a regular computer). I figured that's why I got it cheaper, but I just really wanted that figure, so the sticker doesn't matter to me. If they mass produce later, I will be able to buy one to open.
I would be pretty annoyed if I went through the Funko line drama, and didn't get one with an SDCC sticker! Yikes!

It's just a sticker people. It is still an exclusive created for 2014 by Funko for all of us collectors to purchase if we so desire. It amazes me how people are getting hung up on what the sticker says or how it looks. It does not increase the value of it if it is a SDCC version vs. the generic one and if someone tries to sell you one on eBay saying that it is more valuable, I suggest you don't buy into the hype. What makes these pieces "exclusive" is that they were created specifically for conventions such as SDCC or for vendors who reached out to Funko wanting to have a chance to sell an exclusive. THAT is what makes them an exclusive, not the sticker, exclusive to that seller such as Gemini or Fugitive Toys. It is also what the piece looks like that makes it an exclusive, such as GITD or flocked. The sticker is just a quick way to identify that it is "special".

I collect Funko because I love the product. I have many exclusives in my collection because I love the variant versions of the products when compared to my regular ones. I certainly don't buy them just for the sticker. :)

funkopopsrock wrote:So what people are saying pop purple Carl from B&N isnt actually a SDCC exclusive?

Yes Jen, Carl is a SDCC exclusive. :)
He just happens to have a different sticker. It is the EXACT same pop that is in the box with the SDCC sticker on it. There is absolutely nothing different about the two when compared outside of the box, or when you compare their boxes for that matter. The sticker is the only difference. Carl is an exclusive because he is different than the regular Carl pop. That is what makes him an exclusive. And if everyone remembers... Barnes and Noble's write up about the pieces they were going to have said they were selling SDCC pieces. So did the write up that Hot Topic had. And if anyone paid attention to the photos shared here on the forum, Hot Topic had a reserved table at FunDays. That tells me they have a good relationship with Funko...that seems like a win-win to me.

I for one am thrilled that more and more vendors are getting in the game when it comes to selling Funko, be it exclusive pieces or regular pieces. It just makes the hunt that much more challenging and fun!!

If I'm not mistaken, I think that the Pops that have either sticker were ones that are labeled "Limited Edition" and don't say how many pieces have been made? While the other exclusives (like the Bloody Hannibal) have the "regular" looking SDCC sticker that states specifically how many pieces were made of that Pop on the sticker.

I'm personally not nitpicky about the sticker, but I can understand why others would be in this case.

I do like the fact that the SDCC sticker shows the edition size of each piece, but the sticker does not change the fact that it's the exact same item either way!!! :)

THE COMIC CON LOGO IS TRADE MARKED, SO B&N CAN'T USE IT. BLAME THE CON FOR THE STICKER BS. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE IS YOU STOOD IN LINE IN SAN DIEGO OR YOU CHILLED AT B& N AND ORDERED A LATTE

I can appreciate wanting the Comic Con sticker if you're an in box collector. Out of box collectors probably won't care as much. How does this affect value? No idea.

(I don't care, just curious..)

Do the "limited" but available elsewhere ones sold at SDCC have 'SDCC' or 'Convention' stickers? Is it Hannibal & Huck vs. Elsa and Luke, or is it Elsa-in-San-Diego vs. Elsa-at-B&N?

EDIT: I see the above comparison is "limited" and "limited," so I guess there are differently-stickered identical boxes.

It's the same figure, made at the same time, in the same box... all the sticker says* is that it was physically purchased in a discrete location. And if you weren't the purchaser, you can't even know that. If you were you have your memories and receipt to 'prove' it.

Why does it matter? :( Is it not enabling and funding flippers..?

I made a conscious decision to collect every stickered variant at the very start of my collection... at the time it didn't bother anyone so im not sure why it should now. I dont care about 2 different stickers, im not whinging about it, im just saying I will collect both because thats how I do things. I like keeping them in box and i like all the different stickers. Its simply personal preference at the end of the day.

I appreciate you taking the time to say that. :) And I'm all for personal preference, and hope it doesn't feel as if I'm getting at/complaining about/judging you personally - I was just trying to understand it a bit..

Personally, it does (if only tangentially) bother me a little because I fear that it does help enable flippers, does force up prices and drive artificial scarcity. I also am curious on several levels about the reasoning - and I can certainly sympathise with OCD tendancies and decisions made when stickers were less abundant! - because the figures are the 'thing' and the 'thing' is the same. The sticker signifies place of original sale only, and while a sticker is more showy than a receipt, a receipt is more accurate and more personal... while a sticker is no longer a cast-iron guarantee of what it ostensibly implies...

But, to each their own. :) Good luck!

(I also suspect that some of the consternation this time is that there are TWO stickers where logically there should be one. It seems as if this is a dictated situation from the SDCC board designed for no obvious reason to be bloody-minded. And it is they who should be - and are? - getting the brunt of the annoyance.)
