TRES,
This is all amazing man... Ive built my own throwne/slab for Jabba as well as working on a custom Han in Carbonite. this is exactly what i had in mind just enough detail to be considered POP with out cutting corners.
My Han is a custom sculpt if I had another Han to Sacrifice I would have gone the route you went
maybe next time... who knows, I just might have to do that, there's always room for improvement plus that gives me an excuse to keep working on it right LOL

Drucifer, thank you! You should start a thread with pics of your work, sounds very cool
Squidward, thanks very much
Work continues on the GoT display and so far I'm really digging it! I'll probably finish it over the Thanksgiving break.

Sneak peek of the GoT display backdrop
It's flat on the table in the photo, but the back piece is going to be spaced back an inch or so and the window and archways will be lit from behind with led strips.

Eh, I guess it's okay....
Ha! just kidding, you're off to a fantastic start.

I like how you're moving away from the exact realistic proportions, so it will fit with the Pop figures. Matching the background to the Pop figure style.

Re: My custom displays- GoT display up next...
Good eye Randy
I actually used that exact same photo you posted and drew an exact replica in CADD (overlaying the photo, just takes a few minutes). I printed it out and put it behind the display, then sketched the cartoon version right over the top of it using the Pop Iron Throne for reference. Scanned the sketch and drafted it in CADD again, mainly so I could draw half of it and mirror it to get it exactly symmetrical. Printed that version out and spray-mounted it to the foam board and cut it out. Probably sounds like a lot of steps but it didn't take as long as it sounds
Anthony- thanks! Will probably finish it this weekend, the riser part that holds the Pops is finished, the backdrop is the last part.

Thank you Spiff!
Emcee, I'll answer your question this way- when Joff was poisoned I actually laughed out loud, and couldn't quit laughing for the entire scene
It actually sounded like one of those evil laughs, you know, BwaaaaHAAAHaaaHA!
Rev, thank you! That is a sweet display, thanks for sharing! Great homage to the opening scene! Somewhere down the road I want to do a display of the famous street scene where they hang out, I'm hoping Funko eventually flocks the rest as I want to do a flocked set in the display

Here's another "under construction" pic, shows what it takes to get those nice soft lighting glows! Window is lit red, archways yellow.

Very cool, great job! I did some GoT displays last year. I started the Wall as well but still need to finish that one:

I've made some custom display stands for mine. I only have a handful of characters (I also have Jon, Dany and Renly but they're not pictured), so I've only made Winterfell and King's Landing so far.

That's very cool, nice job on those! What are the walls made of, clay? I actually plan on doing some banners similar to yours, that's something I'm going to mess with today. I was going to do them at work yesterday as the color printer is better, but I got sidetracked with "real" work

Thanks, they're first attempts so a bit rough around the edges, but I learned a lot from them. I just drew the banners with Sharpie on paper but I'd love to do some on fabric.
The walls are polystyrene that I used a hot wire to sculpt into shape. I wanted them to look more like stone and rock so I then covered them with 3 layers of grout. Time consuming but nice effect - hot wire sculpting worked really well on The Wall I'm doing: I'll try to get some pics this weekend.

Re: My custom displays- GoT display up next...
Joe, I hope it was a dream, otherwise I better get busy
Jon, thank you! It's almost finished, I'm waiting on a couple of Pops (finally got a Renly for a fair price, unboxed but it's going in the dio so no biggie) and I need to make the banners at work tomorrow. I really, really love how it turned out and am dying to do a reveal here, but I want it 100% complete
In the meantime I've already started another- it's Batman themed.
Thehuntman, thanks!

Friggin amazing work! When did you get the idea and drive to make these dioramas? Was it an extension of former Art training? I myself majored in Art in College but do not practice the fine arts any more. I instead do carpentry as a hobby and it keeps the creative juices flowing!

Thank you, that's very kind of you
I've always loved tinkering with things- cars, motorcycles, plastic model kits, R/C planes, etc. ever since I was a kid (I'm 54 now). It's definitely as you say- an outlet for creativity. I've never had any kind of formal training beyond a few art classes in college (I'm an architect), most of what I know is just from years and years of being involved in these hobbies. My carpentry skills are pretty poor and I always admire people that are good at it, so my hat is off to you

Thanks! The GoT display should be done this week if my Pops arrive, and I think the Batman display will follow not too far behind! I'm already thinking about what the project after that one will be

Built the two banners with standards this evening, I guess this kind of gives away who will be on the throne if anyone hasn't figured that out yet
Just waiting on two Pops to arrive and then I'll post the final pics!

Tres, your displays are truly amazing! You are even a source of inspiration for us to also get started. My wife and I have just begun and we will also post our progress as we advance, but your tips were a great help to get us started!
Quick question, for the Game of Thrones display, is that styrofoam from a hobby store you are using as basic material?

Re: My custom displays- GoT display up next...
Thank you Joe, Taro and Beto!!
Taro, that material is called "foam core" here in the states, I'm not sure if that's a universal term but it's a 3/16" board with foam in the middle and a paper facing on each side. Walmart has it in black or white. I mostly use the black although I did mix in some white on the Wampa cave. The black I use has black foam in the middle too, I've seen black facing with white foam which could be an interesting look, I've never tried it. Some hobby places have other colors of paper available too, it's usually just one one face though (like yellow paper on white foam with a white backing). So there's lots of opportunity for some interesting projects! I usually stick to black because the Pop colors really stand out against it, so it's more of a backdrop to the Pops.
I am waiting on one more Pop to wrap up the GoT display. In the meantime I've been cranking on the batcave and it's nearly done too. Just have a few details to add. So pics of both will be posted in the next couple of days
